Why do split ends appear?

Editor's tip: If you notice that your hair is splitting, immediately provide it with sufficient moisture and nutrition. A light moisturizing shampoo is perfect for this. For example, Love Beauty and Planet “Volume and Generosity” shampoo. It is enriched with natural coconut water and created specifically for thin and lifeless hair. The product moisturizes and softens hair, while giving it volume and shine. Works great in conjunction with the air conditioner of the same name.

Think about what changes have happened to you and your hair lately. Often the cause is changes in climatic conditions. Maybe you've just returned from vacation? Hair ends damaged by ultraviolet radiation and salt water quickly deteriorate. Or maybe, on the contrary, you are often in the cold? Even if you wear a hat, it can protect the bulk of your hair, but not the ends.

However, this is only one of many possible reasons. What else causes split ends?

What could be the reasons?

You can improve the health of split ends if you find out what is causing the splitting of the strands. Each hair is protected by a unique sheath and fat, which is secreted by the sebaceous glands on the head.

This protective layer protects against moisture evaporation, which makes the strands elastic and shiny.

REFERENCE! When the sebaceous glands are inactive or do not “work” at full strength, then the lubricant that is released from them is not enough. Therefore, the hair is partially protected. The ends dry out quickly, become weak and easily damaged.

The functioning of the glands is impaired. There are several reasons for this:

  • exposure to an iron, as well as a hairdryer, curling iron;
  • lack of nutrition, moisture;
  • pH level disturbances.

So, what to do at home if your hair ends are split? Let's take a closer look.

In order to maintain the current condition of the hairstyle, not to worsen, but even to improve the appearance of the hair, it is important to provide the strands with proper care. To do this, you need to take care of your appearance:

  • wash your hair no more than twice a week (maybe once every 5 days);
  • refuse a hair dryer, curling iron, and other equipment (or use all this to a minimum);
  • rarely use foam, varnish and other styling products;
  • wear a hat in winter, summer, in bad weather, during snow/rain/heat (a hat, scarf or hat must completely hide the strands);
  • make masks 1-2 times a week;
  • comb only dry hair (start from the ends and gradually move up);
  • use only natural (preferably wooden) combs;
  • use homemade shampoos more often;
  • apply homemade serum to the strands to protect the strands (it’s easy to do: leave the milk in a warm place for half a day, heat it in a saucepan, pour the resulting liquid into a container with a spray and apply to the hairs, do not rinse);
  • refuse paints with ammonia;
  • massage your head every day (at least 10 minutes) and/or visit a massage parlor every week;
  • dry your hair without a hairdryer;
  • rinse your strands with herbs after washing;
  • avoid shampoos with parabens;
  • get enough sleep;
  • take vitamins and mineral complexes.

Before you take active steps in the fight against split ends, find out the causes of the problem in this publication.

Why does hair split?

Improper care

This can include both incorrectly chosen care and unnecessary manipulations with hair. For example, shampoo can harm your hair if it is not created for your hair type. Or the abuse of styling products that can dry out the strands. Also, if you often use a hair dryer and straightener, the ends of your hair suffer from hot air. In addition, even a love of hair ties or combing your locks immediately after washing can cause split ends.

Editor's tip: Unless you're ready to ditch your hair products altogether, stick to the lightest, most subtle ones. For example, Toni&Guy Tousled Texture Creation HairSpray “Light Hold” spray varnish. It is suitable for natural, flexible hold without gluing throughout the day. In addition, this product can also be used to shape the styling, and not just to complete it.

Frequent dyeing and perms

Do you regularly dye your hair (especially in light colors - with preliminary bleaching) or do you perm? Then you probably already have split ends. The hair structure deteriorates after each manipulation. If you are a frequent visitor to beauty salons, do not forget that your care must include nourishing masks. They will help protect the ends of your hair.

Editor's tip: We love the TIGI Bed Head Color Goddess Nourishing Hair Mask. It contains sweet almond oil, pro-vitamin B5 and shea butter. The product helps maintain bright color, and also nourishes and smoothes the cuticle. The mask softens the hair and gives it incredible shine! The unique formula of the product “locks” the color inside the hair, protecting it from washing out.

Poor nutrition

If your diet lacks beneficial elements and vitamins, your hair becomes weaker and brittle. Limit fatty, fried and sweet foods in your everyday menu. Add greens, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and meats, red fish and seafood, nuts and grains. And you will notice that quickly your hair will look better. Of course, this will not get rid of existing split ends, but it will prevent new ones from appearing.

Causes of damage

  1. Thermal impact . Styling with an iron or curling iron, using curlers, drying with a hairdryer.
  2. Chemical exposure . Coloring, use of coloring tonics and shampoos, perm, straightening.
  3. Wrong comb .
    A metal comb can damage the scalp. Massage combs need to be changed every 3-4 months, because microcracks appear on them. They damage the hair structure and can injure the skin. Brushes are not able to comb thick hair well. A properly selected comb should not cause harm to your hair and scalp.
  4. Incorrect care . Shampoo that does not match the type; combing wet hair; neglect of masks, balms and individual intolerance to the components of hair cosmetics can cause brittleness, dullness, seborrhea and split ends.
  5. Dehydration . A person should drink 30 ml of pure water per day per kilogram of his weight (if you weigh 50 kg, you should drink at least 1.5 liters of water).
  6. Lack of fluid affects all systems of the body. Weakness appears, immunity decreases, brain activity deteriorates, and the condition of the skin, hair and nails deteriorates.

  7. Poor nutrition . A lack of micronutrients and unsaturated fatty acids leads to malfunctions of the pelvic organs (primarily the ovaries), and deterioration of the condition of hair and skin.
  8. Lack of vitamins . For the normal functioning of all systems, the body requires a certain amount of useful microelements and vitamins. If there are not enough of them, the body replenishes their need in the most accessible place for it - in the curls and nails.
  9. Decreased immunity . Various diseases can reduce the performance of the human immune system. This leads to disruption of all body functions, including hair problems.
  10. Styling . Tight hairstyles and constant styling can damage the structure of individual hairs. Over time, there are more and more damaged hairs, which leads to dullness, loss of smoothness, increased fragility and split ends.
  11. Injury to the scalp . Severe frost, scorching sun, chemical burns, various microtraumas of the skin can affect the growth and condition of hair.

Methods of disposal

In order to prevent “cutting” of the hair, in some cases it is necessary to be diligent and resort to auxiliary measures. A guaranteed result can only be achieved with an integrated approach. So…

Solution 1

Trimming the ends is a radical method, but the most effective. Experts believe that if the ends of the hair are separated, then nothing can “glue” them together, this has been tested – and more than once! And first of all, what needs to be done: to prevent split ends, cut the ends.

Haircutting with hot scissors has proven itself very well - the process is not cheap, but very effective, since after it the ends of the curls are sealed, as it were, thereby preventing further development of the problem. However, you can cut your curls in the usual way, otherwise each split hair may split along its entire length, and we don’t want this most of all, right?

Note! By the way, regardless of whether there is a problem or not, it is recommended to update your hairstyle every 3-4 months, that is, cut off the ends. This promotes a better look and activates the growth of strands.
