Nominations for “Oscar” - no surprises “Joker”, “The Irishman”, “1917” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” will compete for the award; Russia was left without mention

The 2020 Oscar winners have been announced. This is the triumph of "Parasite" and "1917"

oscar 2020

The 2020 Oscars ceremony is coming to an end in the United States, and all the award winners are known. The winner in the Best Film category unexpectedly became “Parasite”, and not “1917”, for which critics and journalists predicted this statuette. However, the drama by Sam Mendes, as well as the audience’s favorite “Joker” and “Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood” also provided the actors and creators with a victory, and more than one.

In Los Angeles on February 9 (in Russia at this time it was already the 10th day) the Oscar ceremony from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences started. Celebrities have already walked the red carpet - and the winners in all categories are known. Thus, the statuette for best film in 2020 went to “Parasite.” This is the first time that a foreign film has won in perhaps the most prestigious Oscar category. Along with “Parasite,” “1917,” “Joker,” “Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood,” “Marriage Story,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Jojo Rabbit” competed for the title.

In the category “Best Actor in a Leading Role”, actor Joaquin Phoenix beat out four competitors - Arthur Fleck in the film “Joker”. The award could also go to Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”), Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”) and Jonathan Pryce (“The Two Popes”).

The statuette for Best Leading Actress went to Renee Zellweger for Judy Garland in the film Judy. She also beat four rivals - actresses Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Charlize Theron (Scandal) and Saoirse Ronan (Little Women).

The Best Director nominations included Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, Todd Phillips' Joker, Sam Mendes' 1917, Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Bong Joon Ho's Parasite. The award went to Bong Joon Ho.

Shortly before the Oscars, the winners of another prestigious award, the Grammy, were announced in the United States. In 2020, the winner in many nominations was expectedly the young singer Billie Eilish. At the same time, the girl was so amazed at the success that she found another owner for one figurine. And judging by the video from the ceremony, the girl didn’t really want such results - the fans understood why and only love her even more now.

And after the Grammys, perhaps the country’s main sporting event, the Super Bowl, took place in the United States. It gave viewers not only an exciting competition, but also original advertisements: just look at the promo with Jason Momoa, who became a skinny bald man in the video. There were also some memes, and one of the most popular was provided by Shakira, who stuck out her tongue from the stage.

Stars of sports and show business will gather in St. Petersburg on February 18 for the awards ceremony of the world sports academy “Laureus”.

The unofficial name of the Laureus award is the “sports Oscar”. This award is fundamentally different from those medals that are awarded at ordinary international tournaments and championships. The World Academy of Sports, which includes 43 outstanding athletes from different countries, awards not for specific sporting achievements, but for the totality of merit. In other words, becoming a Laureus winner means “officially” becoming one of the legends of world sports.

“The World Academy of Sports is not only involved in presenting this award,” said Laureus General Director Guy Senan, under whose leadership the final preparations for the ceremony are underway in the Northern capital. — In different countries of the world, we implement about 50 charity projects under the motto “Sport for Good.” These projects are mainly intended for children. We hope that our projects will soon be implemented in Russia.

Holding the award ceremony in St. Petersburg is an important event also because during the nine years of Laureus’ existence, Russia, despite all its successes on the world sports arena, remained “overboard” of this movement. Quite eloquent, for example, is the fact that among the 43 members of the Laureus world academy there is not a single athlete from Russia. Sergei Bubka, who is among the “academicians,” represents Ukraine there. However, Guy Senan admitted that the authority of Russia is undeniable, and therefore it is quite possible that in the near future the composition of the international jury will be replenished with one of the Russian sports legends. However, in order to become a member of Laureus, you must, among other things, voluntarily accept the obligation to engage in charitable projects of the academy.

“The award ceremony will take place on February 18 in the concert hall of the Mariinsky Theater,” said Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Sergei Tarasov, who is in charge of preparations for the celebration on the Russian side. — And within a few days before this, various promotions will take place. Famous athletes will conduct demonstration lessons and master classes. It is already known that swimmer Mark Spitz will conduct the lesson. Negotiations are underway with Nadia Comaneci (gymnastics), Boris Becker (tennis) and Katarina Witt (figure skating).

The Laureus Award has no monetary value, it is simply a symbol of recognition from famous athletes. It will be awarded in seven main categories: “Best Athlete of the Year”, “Best Female Athlete of the Year”, “Best Team of the Year”, “Discovery of the Year”, “Comeback of the Year”, “Best Athlete with Disabilities” and “Best Representative of Active Sports” " In addition, prizes are awarded in several special categories: “Spirit of Sports”, “For Lifetime Achievements”, “For Charitable Activities in Sports”. Which of them will be awarded this year and who will become their owners is kept secret until the last moment.

The attention of Russian fans will be focused on the “Best Athlete of the Year” nomination, since it is in this category that the only representative of our country, Elena Isymbaeva (pole vault), is vying for victory. Elena can already be called a Laureus veteran - she was repeatedly nominated for the award in this category, and last year she became the winner. By the way, another demonstration lesson - in athletics - will quite possibly be taught by Elena Isymbaeva, together with the legendary American runner Edwin Moses, who is the president of the Laureus World Sports Academy.

How are Oscar nominees chosen?

Previously, Academy members voted using paper ballots. Now they have the opportunity to submit an electronic form via the Internet or vote the old-fashioned way. Academicians must make their choice and send documents to the auditing company PricewaterhouseCoopers no later than January. The top five in each category are chosen by guilds - actors vote for the best actors, screenwriters for the best script, makeup artists for the best makeup, etc.

Article on the topic

The best of the best. The Film Academy has announced the Oscar nominees. The exceptions are the nominations “Best Foreign Language Film”, “Best Animated Feature” and nominations dedicated to documentaries and short films - they are formed by specially selected committees, which include Academy members from all guilds.

The only category for which all Academy members (about 6,000 people) vote is “Best Picture.”

You can only vote for films that academicians have seen on the big screen. Exceptions include films in a foreign language, documentaries and short films. You can watch them at home.

In January, nominees are announced at a morning press conference in Beverly Hills.
