Is it worth sewing up jeans?
In fact, will such a renovation be of any use? It definitely will. High-quality denim fabric lasts a very long time, but the high cotton content in the composition and increased load cause it to wear out over time. Most often, a hole in jeans appears on the knee, on the butt, between the legs, and also along the bottom of the trouser leg. With proper repairs, the life of your favorite jeans can be doubled!
There are several ways to remove a hole in jeans:
1. apply a neat patch;
2. if the hole looks like a cut, just stitch it up;
3. apply darning.
How to get rid of abrasions
Sometimes it happens that there is no hole, but it is about to appear on your product, but in the meantime, in its place there is abrasion, large or not.
You need to turn the jeans inside out and carefully fold the edge that is most frayed in the product. Now you can carefully patch it up with a machine, leaving a small, neat seam in place.
Typically, such holes are small and unnoticeable. And this is the hardest thing. It is harder to sew up small holes rather than large ones.
To do this, you need to take threads of the same color as the product, slightly bend the edges of the hole and carefully connect them, using a stitch with only one row. But you need to sew it up very tightly, since the soft part of our body is subject to a lot of tissue load.
If you think that sewing black jeans and regular ones is somehow different, then you are deeply mistaken. Black jeans are easier to sew up, since they are often monochromatic and the threads are easy to match, unlike the classic look of jeans, for which it is sometimes difficult to choose a color that matches the color of the product.

Hello, dear craftswomen!
Today I propose to pay attention to jeans. I think that there are a small number of people who don’t have them in their wardrobe. Modern fashion offers us jeans with trim, decorations, lycra, as well as with scuffs and holes in different places. These are the ones I want to talk about today.
I agree, abrasions on denim look beautiful, but when they are small, neat and few in number. As soon as they start to tear further, since the material in these places is weak, they look ugly and cheap.
Apparently, for this reason, clients often come to us whose abrasions begin to spread and tear in different directions. They ask us the same question: “How to fix a hole in jeans? Is it possible to patch it up nicely and close the knee?” Yes, of course you can.
Today, at the request of many readers, I bring to your attention a master class, after which you will be able to mend a tear on your knee, butt, in any place you need. And you can continue to wear your favorite jeans.
How to sew up jeans discreetly
If wearing ripped jeans isn't your plan, they need to be repaired immediately! This service is provided by most studios, but if you have a sewing machine, you can do this work on your own. You just need to find pieces of denim in the right color. By the way, never throw away the scraps left after shortening your trousers: they can still serve a good purpose.
First, trim the threads sticking out along the edge of the hole. Turn the jeans inside out and mark a contour around the hole 1-2 cm larger than its size. Make sure that the patch will be placed on a strong, non-fraying fabric. If it is clear that the material around the hole will also soon deteriorate, increase the size of the patch. Treat the edges of the patch so that they do not fray. Place it on the wrong side of the jeans and secure with pins or a few large stitches. Turn the jeans right side out and carefully stitch the edges of the hole along with the patch fabric. It is best to do this with a zigzag seam. If you want the patch to be as invisible as possible, choose threads to match your jeans.
A hole in jeans between the legs is a little more difficult to repair. You will have to separate the fabric sheets at the seam, put a patch on each sheet, and then sew them again.
How to sew up a hole in your knee with your hands?
It will not be possible to sew jeans at the knee without it being noticeable. However, for lovers of handmade work, in this case there are many opportunities to show creative imagination.

Below are some of the most obvious options for decorating a hole in the knee:
- Denim patch in contrasting color.
- A patch made of printed fabric of a different type and texture.
- Contrasting decorative darning.
- Application.
- Leather patch.
Decorative patches can be sewn on the front side or peeking out from the gap on the back. They can be done on both knees, placed symmetrically, or on just one.
How to sew up a crack in denim
If the worn-out fabric has cracked and a gap has formed, it is easy to remove. It is enough to trim the “shaggy” edges to a minimum, align them and sew with a zigzag seam. However, if the fabric has already become too thin, this method will not help for long. To make the seam strong, you will first have to apply a strip of thick fabric to the back of the jeans, and only then sew the edges together with additional fabric.
You can also repair a horizontal or vertical hole in jeans with adhesive cloth: in this case, first place the adhesive material under the torn area, accurately align the torn edges, iron everything with a hot iron, and then proceed to create a beautiful and even stitch.
Hole in jeans between legs
If the hole is formed along a factory seam, then it won’t be too difficult for you to sew it up. Fraying between the legs of jeans is the second main reason for the formation of holes. Especially when you wear stretch jeans.
It is on these types of jeans that the largest number of holes are formed. For work, also select threads that match the tone of your jeans. Next, start stitching from one side to the other and then work your way back. After you have made stitches with thread on one side, proceed to the other.
For example, you started with a horizontal line, now move on to a vertical line. On top of such a “mesh” darning, proceed to the same similar darning, only on top to hold the fabric together more tightly. This type of suture is called “stitching”.
But you can patch your trousers without the help of your hands or a needle, and just use a machine.
Darning jeans
It also happens that the material has worn through, but there is no hole yet. In this case, it is convenient to use the darning technique on a sewing machine. You just need to choose the threads that best match the color of your jeans. To mend a hole in jeans, set your sewing machine to the straight stitch setting and make several parallel stitches on the fabric, placing them close together. Depending on the result obtained, it is recommended to make several perpendicular lines. This will help compact the fabric and after steaming the darning area will be almost invisible. This technique can also be used if a hole has already appeared in the jeans, to strengthen the fabric in adjacent areas.
So, it’s possible to save your favorite and often expensive jeans! To sew up a hole in your jeans, you only need basic sewing skills and a great desire to preserve your favorite item.
How to make a patch between your legs
Technique:
- Set the “Straight stitch” mode on the machine;
- Next, the fabric should be compacted by tightly pressing the edges of the material to each other and making parallel lines using a foot;
- Steam the darning area so that it becomes almost invisible to the human eye.

Large holes cannot be sewn up this way, but if the fabric has just begun to unravel, this will help it maintain its appearance and gain additional density in this place.
Application on the knee
How to sew a patch on jeans between the legs? In general, the following actions are performed:
- Searching for suitable fabric by color, shade and texture, if there is no original one;
- Laying out your pants so that the hole is clearly visible;
- Cutting off the required piece of fabric and stitching it on a machine;
- Turn the jeans inside out and apply the patch facing inside out;
- Sew a patch along the contour;
- Turn the pants inside out and sew them right side together.

. Important! To repair jeans in intimate areas, you can also use ready-made applications and patches. They do not need edge processing and have various shapes and contain drawings.
Some models already contain drawings
It is possible to sew up jeans inconspicuously by hand for various types of damage by selecting the appropriate restoration technique.
For example, for complex angular ruptures, repairs are carried out as follows:
- Place the damaged area on a hard surface.
- Carefully iron the wrong side of the tear.
- Tighten the edges with a thin basting thread. Start with the shorter side of the corner, then sew the second, longer side.
- Each direction of the tear is sewn together with a “needle by needle” suture, starting, as in the previous operation, from a shorter line.
- Sew the treated sides of the corner with an “over the edge” seam.
- Iron through a damp cloth.
A hole burned by a cigarette or a spark from an open fire source is usually not large in size, has a round shape and characteristic dark scorch marks along the edges. The repair method should be chosen based on these features. The sealing of round holes was discussed above.
However, if the hole is very small and does not exceed 2 - 3 mm in diameter, it can be carefully sewn up with thick threads, pulling the edges together. If the seal is carried out using the method described above, the scorched edges of the hole should first be treated. The scorch marks are cut with scissors, and then the edge of the hole is folded over to the wrong side and hemmed.
A patch will not be needed if a blind stitch is used for the repair. To create a neat and invisible blind seam, you will need to follow the steps described below sequentially.

Technique:
- Insert a needle and thread randomly into the fabric from the reverse side and bring it out onto the face, leaving a knot in the fold of the fabric on the reverse side.
- Connect the edges of the tear by inserting the needle at a distance of 4 - 5 mm from the edge.
- Make a straight stitch, bringing the needle and thread to the front side.
- Repeat this action until the break line is completely closed. While working, the thread should be slightly tightened after each stitch.
- At the end of the work, secure the thread by threading it through the loop and tightening it slightly.
How to sew up a hole in jeans. Master Class
Our task:
- Strengthen the material on the knee
- Hide the hole
- Patch the torn part
To work we need:
- interlining;
- denim;
- iron;
- scissors;
- sewing threads of a suitable color;
- sewing machine;
- pins;
- basting needle.
Progress:
In front of us is a large hole in the knee, which has already begun to tear down. Photo 1 - 2.
- The first thing to do is to strengthen the fabric around it so that during further wear of the product this place does not tear. As we did in this case, we rip the side of the trouser leg.
This is done for convenience during the repair process. If the hole is in the butt area, there is no need to do this, since the approach to it will be convenient through the top of the jeans.
Now, iron the torn area with an iron. We put interlining around it, with the adhesive side to the fabric (photo 3). Using the “pair” function we fix it. Photo 4.
- Turn the product right side out. From denim material, cut out a rectangle or oval of the required size. If possible, we sew the edges with an overlock or zigzag stitch on a sewing machine. But this is optional. Picture 5.
- I place the prepared patch (using an open seam along the inner seam of the trouser leg), closing the hole and pinning it with pins. Shot 6. I baste in a circle.
- We select threads suitable for darning, folding them several times and comparing them with the main fabric. Picture 7.
- We sit down at the sewing machine, thread it with selected threads and sew up the torn part, then we go in a circle.
We use the basic stitch and the machine's forward-backward function. We stitch, taking into account the twill weave of the fabric, which is distinguished by a characteristic rib running diagonally.
Attention! Sew up, stitching in the direction of the hem. Shot 8
- We take out the basting, iron the patch and sew up the inner seam of the trouser leg, which we used for convenience during darning.
Hooray! Everything is ready!))) Well done! This is what our knee looks like now.))) Picture 9.
