How to choose a dog breed to suit your personality?

Advertising slogans about dog breeds

Selling and selling puppies left and right, “breeders” are sometimes naive, deceitful and biased!

Here are a few recent advertising gems: * “Fila Brasileiro is the only breed of dog that reads the owner’s thoughts from a distance”, * “Pit bull terrier is a wonderful nanny for a child, the best security”, * “Super-working shepherd dogs, a guarantee of sanity. Dad works in the police", * "The Boerboel is a living legend of Africa, does not require special training", * "The fur (meaning shedding) in the house from a chow-chow is no more than from a kitten", * "The mastiff is controlled by the gaze of the owner", * “Super Rottweilers, 1.5 months, champions with a guarantee, a guarantee of mental health and health”, * “Shar-Pei, plush watchman, friend and bodyguard”, * “Labrador is a genius of the dog world, the breed understands four hundred words”, * “Not smells, doesn’t shed, doesn’t require care”, * “Eats everything, doesn’t suffer from allergies, doesn’t cause allergies!”, * “Takes away the owner’s illnesses”...

Honestly, under this nonsense I would also like to add: “Bobik is the mind, honor and conscience of our era!”, “Sharik is still more alive than all the living!” While sophisticated and respectable professionals, breeders, trainers and veterinarians are dying of laughter reading such advertising opuses, newcomers to dog breeding, gullible citizens and citizens are inspired by what they read and... become victims of advertising.

Intrusive advertising. Advertisements are half-truths. The calculation is correct - most owners do not treat the purchased dog as a “living commodity”. They accept the dog as a member of the family with all that it entails... Family members are usually accepted as they were born.

Life stories

Here are typical examples from the practice of just my communication with acquaintances and acquaintances of acquaintances. A farmer I know was sold money when he complained about a rat infestation... Not cheap, for 400 USD. Jagdts are great rat exterminators. What's true is true. There are no rats, no chickens, no ducks, no cats left on the farm. Not only on the farm itself, but also among the closest neighbors...

Jagdt sat on a chain for six months, stamped out a couple of visiting children and was given to the visiting hunter with relief in his soul. According to rumors, he subsequently became an extremely excellent hunting dog. This is a story with a good ending.

Here’s another (I’m not naming names, for obvious reasons). Again, acquaintances of acquaintances. Mother with daughter. There is no dad. It's scary for two people at the dacha. Following a neighbor's advice, they acquire a "working" Rottweiler from a "cool" couple.

Three years later, the Rottweiler rips out the girl's calf. Literally vomits. The child was treated and rehabilitated for a year and a half. The dog, accordingly, was destroyed by the called policemen. Further? Please... My already quite close friends are purchasing a hairless dog. The one that “doesn’t smell, doesn’t shed, doesn’t cause allergies.” Naked, because the child (a common case!) has allergies.

The result was a severe allergic crisis with hospitalization. The reason is simple - allergies are very, very often caused not by wool as such, but by flaky epithelium. Dandruff, to put it simply. The top layer of skin is constantly renewed, no matter what breed the dog is! Another friend of mine really wanted to have a white Russian greyhound. So, you know, refined, aristocratic... The greyhound was sold willingly, without even asking the middle-aged lady who exactly would walk her and where... The lady is sixty-five, the lady lives on the Moika... The result is a fractured hip of the owner, who was dragged by the dog on a leash dragged half a block along the embankment. For the cat. And so on and so forth…

The best dog breeds for women. Photo

They are most often chosen by girls.

Are you thinking about getting a four-legged friend? Take a look at who the female gender chooses most often. Human selection work has made it possible to create a large number of dog breeds, so everyone can choose a four-legged friend to their liking. However, there are breeds that women still like most, Kronika.info reports with reference to Telegraf.

1. Chihuahua

The most popular and sought-after dog breed among women remains the little cutie Chihuahua. These little ones are easy to carry in your arms or in your purse with you everywhere; they are loyal, smart and funny four-legged friends. By the way, they can be either short-haired or long-haired, again, to the owner’s taste. 2. Pomeranian

spitz

Fluffy dogs of this breed are no less attractive favorites among women. Their cute babyface faces leave no one indifferent, so you just want to peck them on their little black nose. Spitz are small and unpretentious, they can accompany their owner always and everywhere, they especially love to do this in the arms. 3. Russian Greyhound

This breed of hunting dogs is very noble; even in tsarist times it was the most favorite breed among court ladies and husbands. Today, this Russian greyhound evokes no less admiration, especially if she proudly walks next to her confident owner. 4. English Bulldog

This dog breed is very proud, resilient and strong, but loves to sleep to its fullest and prefers leisurely walks, so it is perfect for dreamer girls. Women choose this dog breed not only for status and beauty, but also for strong friendship. 5. Doberman

Women like this dog because of its grace. With such a dog, nowhere is scary, and most importantly, Dobermans are athletic and playful, so this breed is best suited for lovers of outdoor activities. Having a Doberman, you will most often be right in any dispute; not everyone will dare to argue when you have such a serious friend with you. 6. Chinese Crested Dog

This dog can really be called a purely female breed; many men simply do not accept it, but women love it very much. This breed can differ in the presence of fur (poof) and its absence, when only a crest and tassels on the paws and tail remain on the body. Typically, the pouf can suddenly “undress” for its owners at a young age. 7. Yorkshire Terrier

An incomparable breed of miniature dogs that everyone loves, especially women. These fluffy little balls require special care, like a child, so women love to tinker with them, men are touched, and children find cheerful and devoted friends in them. 8. Royal Poodle

poodle

When looking at the representatives of this breed, there will be no doubt where the name came from. Gorgeous dogs that require a lot of care. Despite their harmless appearance, they will boldly go hunting or rush to bravely defend their owner. Such dogs are suitable for patient and proud ladies, since the royal poodle will not only keep company in all matters, but will also emphasize the woman’s status. 9. Pembroke Welsh Corgi

This is the favorite dog breed of the Queen of England. Corgis have accompanied her all her life. Therefore, many women, imitating this majestic lady, prefer to have just such funny, short-toed dogs, since, among other things, they also have a wonderful character.

The breed of the dog doesn't matter

Gentlemen! All well-mannered and intelligent dogs that are on good terms with their owners “read minds from a distance.”

All dogs “feel the owner’s mood with their hearts”!

Like all normal two-year-old children, they easily learn the game “with their feet - stomp, stomp, with their hands - clap-clap!” Yes, my Risen brings home raw meat from the market and glass bottles in his mouth, and herds cattle, and gives me slippers and newspapers, and does many other fun things.

But this is not a distinctive feature of the entire breed as a whole . These are “gadgets” learned by my personal dog in my own separate house! And according to my personal whim.

And they cannot be an advertisement for all Giant Schnauzers without exception. I knew and personally saw an ideally loyal, well-mannered pita. In the house of my Moscow friends.

But this same meek and affectionate (in the presence of the owner) pete literally maimed someone else’s child half to death in the yard when their own son secretly took the dog out into the street to settle scores with the offenders.

The owners had to first spend a monstrous amount of money on the treatment of the injured boy (they are decent people and honestly paid for a series of plastic surgeries), and then move to another area in order to avoid public reproaches. Half-truths are the same lies! Unwashed dogs smell. Everything that is not combed out sheds. There are no exceptions!

The glove will help the owner deal with the fur! You can buy it using this link

Physiology as a science cannot be abolished, just as it is impossible to cement the glands that secrete the contents of secretions onto the surface of a dog’s skin. It's just that some dogs smell very strongly, others not very strongly, and others very slightly.

There is an exit!

All dogs, without exception, require training, education and daily care! Both toy toys and giants of the dog world. Dear breeders! While loading the heads of newcomers to dog breeding with erroneous ideas about a happy and problem-free existence with a dog of your favorite breed, also take pity on the dogs that do not belong to the yard and wander from hand to hand in shelters, foster care and parking lots.

Have pity on the people who bought “a hat that is not Senka’s style” and are doomed to an uncomfortable life with an animal whose upbringing and maintenance may simply be beyond their capabilities. Or not affordable. The breeder must bear moral responsibility for thoughtless breeding and sales.

The breeder must remember the basic biblical truth: “There is a lot of evil in the world. But woe to the one from whose hands it came!” . To complete the introduction - an anecdote from my personal life. One of my very good friends, a middle-aged, very polite and attentive gentleman, peace-loving and unhurried, once with a sparkle of delight in his eyes shared with me a joyful discovery: - Helen! I read this in the newspaper about the breed of “such and such” dogs, listen: “The breed (“such and such”) swears its love to its owner every minute, it does not take its eyes off him and is ready to give its life for him at any moment!” In response, after thinking about it, I asked how old was his marriage with his wife? - Thirty! - he answered. “Imagine that all these years she didn’t take her eyes off you for a minute, followed you on your heels and swore her love to you every minute!” Judging by the expression on his face, he imagined...

Choosing a dog

What rules should people follow when purchasing a dog for the first time in their lives?

How to navigate the variety of breeds offered?

How to avoid making a fatal mistake? So that the characteristics and advantages inherent in each individual breed are pleasing.

And the shortcomings inherent to the same extent were not very annoying. So that the army of dog breeders and dog lovers is replenished and not diminished. And the army of dog haters, on the contrary, was decreasing, and not replenished with bitten, frightened, “allergic”, nervous and “ruined” fellow citizens! Firstly, there are no absolutely universal dogs (or rather, there are - in the movies). Secondly, even within the same breed, different individuals can differ diametrically in the quality of their psyche and strength of temperament.

Thirdly, and most importantly, a future dog owner should think about choosing a particular breed long before he gets his first puppy. Long before it turns out that he is not ready (morally and financially) to solve the problems that arise as the dog grows and matures. Whatever breed it is.

Why does a person need a dog?

How do people buy a dog? Very few do it thoughtfully. Very many - by accident. Someone saw on TV how Commissioner Rex catches bandits and brings the owner a sandwich. And the person already wants such a rex. Or “Beethoven”, or “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”.

No one thought about the fact that a whole army of trainers casts among hundreds and hundreds of dogs of the same breed and selects a dozen of the most capable and beautiful for one role.

That the collective image of a Beautiful Dog in movies is often far from reality - too. Or they get a dog following the example of a neighbor. Look, they say, the neighbor has a dog for a thousand dollars. I’ll buy it for one and a half thousand, and let the neighbor peel off with envy.

Or people saw, for example, a decorative dog of crazy beauty, dressed up, well-groomed, in the arms of a noble lady. And now the wife and daughter are sawing - “we want exactly this!!!” We bought it, but forgot to ask how much effort, money and time should be invested in the dog for it to look like that picture from the exhibition. It turns out that washing and combing is a hassle, there is no time to train and walk, a hairdresser is expensive, buying cosmetics is expensive... And an unwashed monster walks around in tangles, smells like a dog and is annoying with its appearance and behavior.

Common situation? So, advice one: think hard about why you need a dog. For the soul, for company, for purely practical purposes? For work? Property protection? Sports? Hunting? Many people buy a dog as a companion for their child...

And many dogs, not knowing why they were purchased, refuse to obey the child and obey the leader-owner, the eldest in the family. Conflicts with the child and childish grievances are inevitable.

To cope with the fur, I bought a dog combing glove. I just stroke my pet, and all the hair collects on the glove! You can buy it via the link.

Many canine books contain advice on how to choose the right dog breed for yourself. Dog handlers and experienced owners who have raised more than one pet speak about the need to choose a breed wisely. When choosing a breed, you need to take into account your character, habits, lifestyle, temperament, financial situation and many other factors.

You can’t just fall for the first breed you like in appearance without studying its characteristics and comparing it with your own life realities. Neglect of this point leads to a huge number of abandoned dogs in all breeds, candidates for euthanasia, and dogs simply thrown out onto the street, crippled mentally and physically. And I, too, have spoken and written about this more than once in different places on the Internet. But for me, everything was completely different. A short prologue: For as long as I can remember, and I remember myself since I was 10 months old, I have always wanted a dog. The very first appearance of a dog lover among people happened at the age of about 1.5 years, when I told my mother: “I want a dog, buy a dog!” “Okay,” my mother answered, went to the store and bought a plastic dog. I waited impatiently - now they will bring me a dog! Imagine my disappointment when I saw what my mother brought from the store. It didn’t even occur to me that a parent might take my words as if I wanted a toy. I wanted a real dog that runs, barks, wags its tail, has fur and is alive! But it couldn’t occur to her that the ditachka meant a living, real dog, and not a silent piece of plastic. In general, there was a mutual misunderstanding that lasted for many years. It had to happen that a dog lover was born into a family of absolute non-dog lovers. Yes, that's it. I decided on my favorite breed almost immediately, as soon as they started walking me in a stroller around the nearby squares and streets and I began to observe the world around me. Of course, it was a shepherd. In Soviet times, there was no need to add that this was a German or East European shepherd. They simply said “shepherd,” and everyone immediately understood what kind of dog they meant. The appearance of the shepherd delighted me. Standing, sensitively alert triangular ears; incredibly intelligent, almost human brown eyes, carefully observing everything and everyone; slightly sloping pasterns; a smooth, slightly curved fluffy tail, reminiscent of a saber, densely covered with hair. A stunningly beautiful stance, when the front legs stand together, and the hind legs - one is pulled back, and the other is slightly moved forward. This stance creates the impression of concentration, swiftness and strength; the feeling of an elastic spring that will straighten out at any moment. A stretched arrow, ready to break from the string. And the eyebrows, and the black mask covering the entire face, and the ears like a house on the growing shepherd dogs! The Shepherd seemed to me the ideal dog, the standard dog. This is perfection in every line, in every movement, in every hair. Of course, as a child, I could not express my thoughts the way I do now, but only felt that when I saw a shepherd, my heart beat faster, a lump appeared in my throat and something was squeezing in my chest. I looked at every shepherd I met with a look full of delight, adoration and envy and dreamed that someday I would have such a dog. The shepherd is very similar to a wolf, and at the same time it is immediately clear that this is a dog - tame, domestic, faithful, ready at any second to rush to carry out the owner’s command. All shepherd colors seemed equally beautiful to me and I couldn’t choose which one my dog should have. Let it be any or all at once. The main thing is that the shepherd!

Dog companion

Any dog, of any breed, can be a companion. A companion is a dog that spends most of its life with its owner, in close communication with him. And, accordingly, it is very important that the person and the dog are psychologically compatible and do not irritate each other.

It is very important that their temperaments and, if possible, characters coincide. A fast, impetuous and energetic person, athletic, cheerful, will be annoyed by a phlegmatic, sleepy, unhurried dog.

A dog that walks at a slow pace thinks for a very long time. A balanced, unhurried owner, not prone to violent expressions of emotions, will very soon be driven into a frenzy by a choleric dog, emotional and chattering. There are breeds of dogs that, simply due to their physical build and breed temperament, need very heavy physical activity and constant emotional communication and contact.

And if you don’t devote as much time to them as they require, the consequences can be catastrophic for the owners: the dog begins to entertain itself - dismantling the parquet, hanging on the curtains, barking non-stop at the window and at any rustle outside the door. It happens the other way around. There are breeds of dogs with very restrained behavior, self-sufficient, unhurried, and do not need very large walks or exercise. And if you endlessly pester such a dog with suggestions from the “let’s play and take a walk” series, then it will eventually start baring its teeth at the owner from under the sofa at the sight of the leash.

Why was the breed bred?

There is a huge variety of dog breeds on Earth, all over the world . And each individual breed, as a rule, is specialized in some area of application. In the field of activity for which it was bred... There were only three clubs at one time: the service dog breeding club, the hunting dog breeding club, and the toy dog breeding club. Now, alas, everything is much more complicated... Dog breeds have become less specialized.

Permissions for breeding of only a few breeds are regulated almost as before, but are more difficult to control. A huge number of private kennels, a huge variety of dog breeds. When purchasing a puppy, you don’t have to have your head in the clouds. This choice must be approached pragmatically and thoughtfully. 1. Decide what the dog is for (see above). 2. Select and memorize several dog breeds that have a good reputation in the area of application that you have chosen.

Details. What to look for when choosing?

The character of the person who is the future owner of the dog

To choose a dog breed, you need to evaluate yourself as a person. Whether you are an athlete or constantly sit at home, the choice of breed will depend on this. There are several breeds of dogs that only people with a strong and strong-willed character can handle. Today, breeds of decorative dogs are popular, but they are distinguished by manifestations of jealousy towards their owner, and therefore require a lot of attention and time.

If the future dog owner is athletic, active, rides a bike, runs or engages in other outdoor sports, then he should take a closer look at the same active, active breeds of dogs, for example, husky, Irish setter or greyhand greyhound.

If the owner is calm and balanced, then pug or retweeter dogs will suit him.

If the owner has a strong-willed character, then the Rottweiler, Doberman or German Shepherd breeds will suit him.

If you want to buy a dog of a decorative breed, you need to take into account its character. They are stubborn, sensitive and nervous, therefore they require increased attention to their person.

Based on age, it is, of course, better to take a small puppy rather than an adult. Although you will have to tinker with vaccinations and training, you will be confident in the character of your dog.

Characteristics of different breeds

A dog is a full-fledged member of the family. Therefore, when choosing a puppy, first of all you should pay attention to their character and behavior, and not to their appearance. The most intelligent and quick-witted dogs that are easy to train include collies, poodles, German and Belgian shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Labradors, schnauzers, spaniels, and cocker spaniels.

An important point in choosing a pet is also its gender. In each case there are both disadvantages and advantages. If you choose a female, changes in her behavior during the period of estrus are possible, and it is also worth thinking about possible offspring and whether you need them. If a male is chosen, his behavior is usually more stable, and they are also more independent and self-reliant.

Every dog needs care, especially its coat. Some breeds require daily brushing. Think about whether you are ready to constantly collect wool throughout the apartment, and whether all family members are allergic to this wool. In this regard, poodles are the most non-allergenic.

Gender of the dog

The choice you make is important as care for them varies.

How to make the right choice?

Consultation with specialists is very, very desirable. Serious, club specialists: livestock specialists, professionals. It is better if the club you are contacting for advice is not one of the fly-by-night clubs that arose yesterday. Ask how many years the club has existed, how many years ago its “leading specialist” received judicial certification and registered the nursery.

If it was twenty years ago, then most likely in front of you is a real professional.

If “it’s been four years already,” then there is a risk of getting advice from an inexperienced beginner, an “amateur in love.” Discuss your family's list of adoptive candidates with an expert. 3. Create a budget for keeping your dog. Full budget: feeding, treatment, veterinary service (vaccinations, flea and helminth treatments), care products (combs, shampoos, etc.), payment for hairdresser services (if the dog is getting a haircut).

Feeding the pet 4. Toys, beds, etc. 5. Payment for the services of an instructor-trainer and handler (if you purchased a show dog). 6. Payment for the exhibitions themselves. 7. Add to this the time that needs to be devoted to the dog, and the amount of damage that will certainly be caused by the growing puppy. Add, count, think.

Are you ready for these material and moral costs? Maybe the dog should be smaller so that it eats less? (Feeding, properly feeding a dog is expensive!).

Smooth-haired, so as not to spend money on cutting, washing and styling? Kind and small, if you personally cannot afford the cost of training a large working or service breed dog?

Without exhibition claims, so as not to waste time and money on this? Or even get a cat? Or maybe a rat, if you really want to have a live animal in the house, but it turns out you don’t have time to walk with it?.. You’ve made a budget - go with the whole family to a big exhibition. Why big? Because there are more dogs there, more breeds represented, and more serious specialists there.

You can comb it out using a mitten. You can buy it using the link.

Why the whole family? So that all family members come to a compromise and the dog does not become a bone of contention. Looking at your chosen breed up close is very helpful. It is quite possible that you will see and smell something up close that you did not see in the advertising photo. If you like the breed as a whole, look for a dog that you especially like! Start choosing a kennel and the dog's parents.

Choosing a dog for home - how to do it right the first time

Choosing a dog should begin with choosing a kennel.
You need to start choosing a dog by analyzing your own schedule, because this way it’s easier to decide which specific breed you should focus on. In addition, it should be borne in mind that having a four-legged pet in the house presupposes:

  • Additional financial costs, since the pet will need to create a balanced diet, visit a veterinarian with it, and purchase toys and care products for it.
  • The time you will need to devote to your pet. A representative of any breed requires proper attention, for example, if a husky is chosen as a four-legged pet, then you will need to allocate about 2 hours a day for daily walks.
  • The ability to calmly accept pranks, because even the most well-mannered dog will sooner or later turn his attention to shoes, books and other items left unattended in the apartment.
  • Changing the daily routine throughout the pet’s life. The owner will need to take long walks every day and also devote time to training.

If these factors do not cause rejection in the potential owner, you should begin choosing a dog.

Important! Often, each person likes several breeds, from which he chooses the one that suits him best. If you make the right choice, then the question of how to find a good dog will not seem so difficult.

The choice of any breed must be taken responsibly, because the dog is bought for many years

Features of choice, what a dog is needed for, purpose of acquisition

The breed not only determines the appearance of the pet, but also influences its temperament, as well as how much it will cost to keep a pet monthly. It is unwise to choose a specific type based on the criterion of beauty. It is important to decide on the purpose of the purchase, and only then begin the search.

If the future owner wants to see a reliable protector in the animal, it is necessary to analyze whether the desires correspond to the possibilities, because in this case you will have to devote time to training the dog. It is not always possible for an owner to train a dog on his own, so additional expenses will probably be required for the services of a specialist who will teach the pet the necessary commands.

Important! The breeder can choose the breed of the dog, the main thing is to explain to him for what purpose it is being purchased.

If the choice fell on an ornamental breed that will serve only an aesthetic purpose, then it is worth considering that representatives of such breeds categorically cannot stand loneliness. If they are alone with themselves for a long time, their health and character deteriorate.

Only those owners who have previously dealt with such pets or have a strict character should purchase a fighting breed, since an inexperienced person will not be able to resist the character of such an animal. In this case, it is important to show the pet that the leader in the family is the master, otherwise he may become wayward and uncontrollable.

You should choose a breed taking into account your own capabilities, because the dog requires complete dedication

How to choose a breed, basic criteria

If the pet is bought exclusively as a pet, and the owner does not need it to show watchdog qualities, then you can pay attention to decorative breeds:

  • Yorkshire Terrier;
  • Pomeranian Spitz;
  • Chinese Crested.

If an animal is purchased as a guard for an apartment or adjacent territory to a private house, then breeds that have property protection in their blood are suitable:

  • Chinese Shar Pei;
  • Samoyed husky;
  • German Shepherd.

If the owner is an avid hunter and he needs a reliable assistant, then it is worth focusing on such breeds as:

  • Russian hound;
  • kurtshaar;
  • Kerry Blue Terrier.

If the owner is a lover of an active lifestyle and needs a companion, then the following will perform well in this capacity:

  • Mexican Hairless Dog;
  • biyi;
  • Jack Russell Terrier.

For those for whom buying a dog is a way to emphasize their status and financial situation, exclusive breeds are suitable:

  • Bichon Frize;
  • Norfolk Terrier;
  • Affenpinscher;
  • pharaoh hound;
  • Tibetan mastiff.

For a city apartment, you should not choose an individual that is too large

Which dog is more suitable for an apartment, and which one is more suitable for a private house?

Each dog needs certain living conditions, so it is worth considering which pets are suitable for living in apartments and which for a private home, and then ask yourself the question of how to choose a dog.

For living in city apartments

Both miniature, medium and large breeds of dogs are suitable for living in city apartments.

Note! In this case, you should proceed not only from personal preferences, but also from the size of the living space, because the dog should not clutter up all the free space.

Among the miniature breeds we can distinguish:

  • Yorkshire Terrier;
  • pug;
  • French bulldog;
  • chihuahua;
  • dachshund;
  • Pekingese;
  • Pomeranian Spitz.

Medium breeds for keeping in an apartment include:

  • Basenji;
  • Border Collie;
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel;
  • Sheltie;
  • Shar Pei;
  • poodle;
  • Chinese Crested.

As for large breeds, the following are suitable for city apartments:

  • Labrador;
  • collie;
  • German Shepherd;
  • Rottweiler;
  • Saint Bernard;
  • Giant Schnauzer;
  • Newfoundland.

For living on private property

Those owners who do not know how to choose a dog for their private territory should pay attention to the character of the animal, because it must have guard qualities. The following breeds are considered suitable for such service:

  • alabai;
  • Caucasian Shepherd Dog;
  • Moscow watchdog;
  • Boerboel;
  • Tibetan mastiff;
  • Canne Corso.

It is not difficult to purchase a pet to live on private property; in this case, almost all breeds are suitable
