She is a nymphomaniac. A woman for whom sex was not just a natural and pleasant thing, but rather even a basic need in life. And he is a kind, good person. An uncle who knows how to reason and listen.

Those who watched understand: she shot him because he really disappointed her. She was tired, she wanted rest and peace, she believed that he was her only friend. And he suddenly took off his pants and, like everyone else, climbed towards her with his pussy. Well, how could you not kill him? No way. Von Trier builds the film in such a way that we accept this murder and agree with it. But why?

She talked about sex the whole movie. Moreover, this is not the story of a prostitute who, out of great need, through the terrible “I can’t”, went the wrong way. This is the story of a cynical female who fundamentally rejects love and strives exclusively for carnal pleasure. “Love is implicated in hypocrisy, pretense and deception,” she declares. – And sex is natural and honest. Out of a hundred crimes, ninety-nine are committed “in the name of love” and only one is committed in the name of sex.” She accepted a dozen men a night, she was ready to sleep with an entire train for a bag of chocolates, and she specially visited a sadist in order to regain the feeling of carnal pleasure that had been forgotten in her marriage. Choosing between family and orgasm, she chose orgasm. And such a lady shot the kind grandfather because he crawled under her blanket.

She didn’t touch the girl who betrayed her, she couldn’t really shoot the man who humiliated her, she lusted after the sadist who beat her, and she swatted the man who treated her humanely like a bug. Well, isn't it crazy?

A sad man once said that women play the game that a man offers them. If he offers to play at love, then the woman will play at love. Pushkin, Dostoevsky, I have a drum, let me show off! If you delay with “Pushkin”, then in a month your attempt to hint about the “drum” will end in cold-blooded murder. Even the most nymphomaniac nymphomaniac will be surprised, upset, take the gun off the safety and swat you like a bug. Well, or, at least, she will be terribly disappointed and say: “Stepan, let’s not spoil our friendly relations.”

Stacy Martin's film debut had the effect of a bomb exploding. Today, the young girl from von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac” is one of the brightest aspiring actresses in world cinema, says Joe Ellison.


And the casting director says: “Don’t worry, you will have a porn double and an artificial vagina.” This is not the final line of a lewd joke - it's just Stacy Martin telling how she was cast for the role of horny young Joe in Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac. Starring in a more than four-hour exploration of female sexuality by one of the most controversial filmmakers of our time, it's hard to imagine a more daring debut. However, 22-year-old Martin didn’t think twice about it.

“It’s not that I expected to get this role: the world is full of dark-haired girls without me, dreaming of becoming actresses?” Stacey shrugs, calmly sipping a cappuccino in the silence of the Royal Academy.? “Besides, everyone around me was repeating how difficult it is to get into this profession, they convinced me that I would have to participate in wretched productions that no one goes to, that they would pelt me ​​with rotten tomatoes. And so I went to Copenhagen to audition for Lars, returned to London, continued studying and waited to see what would happen next. And then there was a trip to Belgium to film “Nymphomaniac.”

In winter, at the world premiere in Copenhagen, the film was declared a masterpiece, and in the spring, “Nymphomaniac” in two parts reached Ukrainian cinemas. The film consists of a series of dialogues between 50-year-old Jo (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, for whom the script was actually written) and her savior, a good Samaritan (played by Stellan Skarsgård), who stumbled upon her half-dead on the street one night. Each chapter of this idiosyncratic confessional begins with some random detail and reveals how gradually Joe becomes more and more subject to the whims of her libido: Martin's heroine goes from an innocent teenager in the stage of sexual awakening to a mature 32-year-old woman getting married. From this point on, Gainsbourg comes into play, whose heroine seeks to satisfy much darker and more frightening passions.

Like most of von Trier's paintings, "Nymphomaniac" evokes a whole range of feelings: horror, disgust, admiration, irritation, laughter, tenderness and anger, sometimes all together. And although much is said about the exceptional frankness of the film, it cannot be called exciting. As well as erotic. Martin, with his impenetrable face, fragile figure and mysterious stillness, brings a sense of cold equanimity to the character. “We discussed her image with Lars,” says Martin about his heroine, “and decided that Jo is one of those people who does not consider it necessary to explain something. She doesn't make excuses, she's happy with her life. Our conversation helped me a lot, giving me the key to the role: Joe doesn’t think that he owes anyone anything.”

They say that in Martin von Trier he has found a new favorite - an actress to whom, like Gainsbourg, Skarsgard or Willem Dafoe, he will return more than once. At the same time, the director is known for his eccentric antics: he pestered Björk so much on the set of Dancer in the Dark that, according to eyewitnesses, she ate her costume right on the set. And after rash words about Nazism at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, he had to hide from journalists. So what was it like working with Lars von Trier?

“Lars has a lot of complexes and anxieties. And he has a Danish sense of humor,” says Martin. “And Danish humor is not always understood in other countries, but the director does not realize this. And if Lars came here now, you would hardly pay attention to him: he is very modest and quiet. The night before filming, he pulled me aside and said, “I can’t make this movie if you feel uncomfortable in my company or while filming a scene. And even if a certain awkwardness arises, which I can fully understand, you must definitely tell me about it. Otherwise we won’t be able to move forward.”

For Martin, the key to inner comfort was a stunt double for pornographic scenes, a surprisingly flat-chested actress “who is very popular in Germany,” and the aforementioned artificial vagina. “I don’t see anything wrong with that,” says Stacey. “This means that I didn’t dwell on the feeling of discomfort, but thought about work, about the stage, about what I needed to do, and that was the most important thing.” She thinks for a moment.? “And mind you, it took me three hours every day to put it on, because first you have to place the hard layer (after all, the point is that you don’t feel anything), then comes the layer, imitating skin, and then they grab something like chicken fillet and try to make it all up. Despite her Modiglian-like calm appearance, Martin is much friendlier and more charming than she might seem at first glance, she is sincere and witty. Stacy was born in France, but when she was seven years old, the family moved to Tokyo. Martin returned to Paris as a teenager, only to run away to London at 18 “in search of freedom” to take courses in journalism and culture at the London College of Communications. To supplement her modest student budget, she worked as a model. The actress was philosophical about this activity, although without much enthusiasm. “Financial independence was a huge luxury for me,” she explains. “Working as a model gave me that independence and taught me responsibility. I didn't have to work at McDonald's. I was able to save money for the courses I liked.”

Martin earned enough to take acting classes at Actors' Temple, where she continues to study to this day. But she turned out to be too “tiny” for real success in the modeling field. Now Stacey is still petite, she has difficulty finding a Saint Laurent outfit for social events. “I end up just putting on jeans.” And yet you can’t take your eyes off her: long brown hair, alabaster skin, thin arms, slender legs. She prefers the same androgynous style as her film counterpart Gainsbourg - tight jeans, cashmere sweater. Like Gainsbourg, she speaks English, rounding and pronouncing every consonant clearly, like a student at Cheltenham Girls' School. The only time I remember that English is not her native language is when she asks me to explain the meaning of the word effervescent. But this is exactly what she is about: sparkling, albeit in a very restrained manner? – like a sip of champagne.

One thing is for sure: Martin is completely different from other aspiring actresses, with pre-prepared funny stories, rehearsed accents and a whole repertoire of songs. She is friendly without wanting to be liked, smart without false modesty; she is not trying to impress. Stacey now lives in East London with her boyfriend, a bohemian nerd who enjoys music and painting. He saw the film, met Lars and “with enviable calm” watched as his girlfriend was deflowered by Shia LaBeouf.

After her debut, Martin already managed to star in the British drama Barking at Trees and agreed to participate in a film by American director Anthony Lucero. But what can overshadow such a start? Martin is optimistic. “I just want to see where life takes me. And even if I don’t achieve anything, I can always say that I starred with Lars von Trier. And that I have a porn double,” she laughs.
