Oversized and knee socks
In 1989, Julia appeared in an unusual image. The bizarre combination of a loose sweater, black transparent knee socks and lace-up shoes could easily end up in the category of fashion failures. But the actress was able to correctly present the image. Maybe it's all about her radiant smile?
This look could well be repeated in 2020. Oversized is in fashion, and the unusual combination of textures remains relevant to this day.
Actress Julia Roberts: “I usually lie about my personal life”
On New Year's Eve, the animated feature film "Charlotte's Web" was released in Russia, based on the fairy tale by Alvin Brooks White ("Stuart Little"), published 55 years ago, but relevant to this day. This tale is about the interconnection of all life on earth. Izvestia correspondent Galya Galkina talked about this with Julia Roberts, whose heroine the spider Charlotte believed in the power of words, on the eve of the premiere.
“Relationships with your husband cannot be built on manipulation”
question: Mark Twain has an episode in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” when Tom accidentally kills a spider and immediately begins to pray, asking for forgiveness for what he has done. Do you kill spiders?
answer: Now I do this much less often, and for me it is not easy, since I have two small children in the house. But I try to imagine that spiders are also someone’s children, and I feel sorry for them. I put them in a jar and then take them out of the house, although this is not a very pleasant task.
Q: What message does this film convey, other than a reminder that killing spiders is not humane, and generally a bad omen?
A: Some people may think that what happened in the film is a miracle. But very often miracles happen in our daily lives, we just don’t attach importance to them.
Q: They say that as a child you believed that you were the only person in the world who could talk to animals?
A: Yes, that’s why I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. But the main thing is that I wanted to be special, and at school they considered me mediocre. I wasn't funny or athletic, I couldn't speak well, and I was never pretty.
Q: Your heroine Catherine Willis in the film “Mona Lisa Smile” said: “A good wife always lets her husband know that he is the boss of the house.” Do you think so too?
A: Personally, I believe that good relationships cannot be based on manipulation.
Q: What is the basis of your relationship with your husband?
A: I usually lie about this topic. That is, about everything that concerns my personal life.
Q: Where did the talk come from that your parents could not pay the bill that the hospital provided them for your birth, and it was the neighboring family of Martin Luther King who did this?
A: I don’t know, but this is some kind of nonsense. Our families were really neighbors and friends, and Martin’s children studied at my parents’ acting school.
Q: Your parents divorced when you were five years old?
A: Something like that. I once asked my sister Lisa why it took them eighteen years to realize that they didn’t love each other? But now I wouldn't ask such a question. (When Julia's parents divorced, she moved with her mother and sister to the city of Smyrna, and her brother Eric stayed with his father in Atlanta. However, Julia talked to her father on the phone every day and saw him on weekends. The acting school fell apart even before her parents' marriage, so Roberts’ mother found a job as a secretary, and her father began selling vacuum cleaners. - Izvestia).
“It’s not the parents’ fault that their children try all sorts of nasty things.”
Q: Did your father die shortly after the divorce?
A: For some reason they didn’t tell me that he had cancer, so his death came as a surprise to me.
Q: How did your father's death affect your life?
A: I think that losing one of your parents in childhood is like losing faith in a miracle. But I was very close to my sister, and I also had the feeling that my father was always there for me, despite his physical absence, so I talked to him constantly, and it still comes very naturally to me.
Q: How do you remember him?
about: Brown eyes, curly hair and beautiful speech. It seems to me that he was very patient and understood a lot about pleasure.
Q: Who are you more like - your father or your mother?
A: I only got my nose from my father, from my mother. (Julia did not have a good relationship with her stepfather, which often caused problems with her mother. - Izvestia).
Q: Do you blame your parents for your personal problems?
A: No, I have never had such a habit. You know, I still have a childhood photo of me squatting in the park and tasting some shit I found there. I think that parents are not to blame for the fact that children just want to try all sorts of nasty things.
Q: In America, children start earning extra money for their own needs early. At what age did you start working and where?
A: I found a job as a cashier at a local pizzeria when I was thirteen years old. Then I worked in a shoe store, a diner and an ice cream parlor. And after graduating from school, she went to New York, where Lisa was studying acting at that time, and Eric had already received an Oscar nomination for the film “Runaway Train.” My sister and I lived in the same room in perfect harmony for twelve years.
“Driving a tractor is no more difficult than driving a jeep”
Q: What were you doing in New York before you became famous in Pretty Woman?
A: I took acting classes, but I didn't enjoy it. I went to a modeling agency, but they didn’t offer me a job there either. When Eric got the lead role in the film “Red as Blood,” he cast me in the role of the farmer’s daughter. I remember Eric said: “You don’t need to do anything special - just show up in the frame.” Then I took part in the filming of several films and television shows... When I got the role of Vivian in “Pretty Woman,” I weighed ten kilograms more than necessary and knew much less than I needed.
Q: What is the main thing you know now that you didn’t know then?
o: I know that a bad peace is better than a good quarrel.
Q: People are still gossiping about your relationship with Eric. It must have been difficult for him to recognize your superiority in Hollywood after he became the first actor in the family?
A: We really haven’t communicated for a long time, but if something important happens in our family, then we find a way to come to a common denominator. Family is very important to me.
Q: You have homes in Los Angeles and New York, but you married Danny Moder on your ranch in Taos and are now raising your children there.
A: This is my refuge, where nothing reminds me of Hollywood, only a stack of scripts that are periodically sent to me from my agency.
Q: Is it true that you drive a tractor yourself?
o: Yes, it's no more difficult than driving a jeep. The main thing is to have a plan so that you don’t just wander around the field.
Q: They say that living life is not a field to cross. How are you feeling as you approach your 40th birthday?
A: I really like getting older because I have a very good family. This means that I will be able to see my children grow and mature. And also enjoy life with your husband.
Q: What about new roles?
A: The other day I signed a contract to produce Lolly Winston’s novel “Happiness is Sold in One Hand.” I will play a woman who, after her husband’s betrayal, decided to take fate into her own hands.
Q: Are you used to taking fate into your own hands?
A: I constantly engage in self-analysis and try to make decisions that, in theory, should improve my life. Julia and Danny - "a stable Hollywood couple"
Julia Roberts agreed to voice the spider Charlotte ten days after she gave birth to twins Hazel and Finnaeus (they were born prematurely).
Now Roberts, her cameraman husband Danny Moder and their two-year-old children live on their ranch in a beautiful mountain region in Taos County in northern New Mexico. During this time, Julia learned to knit, watch television soap operas and, of course, change diapers. To diversify the monotony of family life, she played two main roles in the Broadway play Three Rainy Days by Richard Greenberg: in the first act, the eccentric southern beauty Nan, in the second, her mother. Critics did not respond well to Roberts' theatrical debut.
In the fall, Roberts starred in Mike Nichols' film Charlie Wilson's War as a Texas socialite who convinces Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks), who controlled secret funding for the mujahideen during the war with the Soviet Union, to support Afghan militants. This picture will take part in next year's Oscar race.
Over the past two years, Julia’s husband has taken part in the filming of seven films, such as “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Scammers Dick and Jane,” “Deja Vu,” and “Spider-Man 3.”
No one knows what happens behind the doors of their ranch, but friends say that sometimes they drive each other into a frenzy. Julia is pedantic and tries to keep the situation under control. Danny is calmer. However, they are considered a stable Hollywood couple. “I don’t need laudatory reviews and awards - I’ve had plenty of them in my life. I want my husband to be happy and my kids to be healthy,” Roberts told me at the Charlotte’s Web premiere.
For the main film award
In 2001, Roberts received the main trophy for any actor - the Oscar. The happy laureate posed in front of photographers in a chic Valentino dress.

The history of the creation of Julia Roberts' iconic outfits for the movie "Pretty Woman"
The cult film Pretty Woman is full of beautiful outfits that, even 30 years after the film's release, continue to inspire the fashion industry. Undoubtedly, one of Vivian Ward's most popular looks was the ultra-sexy call girl look she wore during her scene with millionaire Edward Lewis. Well, the most glamorous of all was the famous red off-the-shoulder dress, which turned the girl into a modern princess. We tell the story of the creation of these outfits in the material vogue.ua.
From swimsuit to iconic dress
Thigh-high boots, XXL hoop earrings, a blonde wig—Julia Roberts' character plays it big in Pretty Woman. The dress, with a crop top and miniskirt connected by a belly ring, was created by costume designer Marilyn Vance.

After studying the actress's figure, the designer realized that, despite her slimness and beauty, Roberts had undefined hips and waist. To turn the actress into a convincing call girl, Vance recalled trends from her childhood. Inspired by the work of designer Rudi Gernreich, she decided to reimagine the swimsuit silhouette with a metal ring at the center, a very popular model in the 1970s. Marilyn Vance's goal was to use clothing to sculpt Roberts' body, to make it desirable. Thus, an open slit towards the center of the dress creates the illusion of curvy figures, turning the heroine into a real femme fatale. The designer completed the look with a pair of inexpensive vinyl boots found in a London punk boutique.
Woman in red
After seducing Edward Lewis, Vivian Ward finds herself embroiled in an impromptu romance with a millionaire. And quickly, a young woman, discovering high society, changes from cheap clothes to a luxurious evening dress with a diamond necklace. Marilyn Vance used Vivian's wardrobe to demonstrate the character's evolution throughout the film. The waist is emphasized, the chest is rounded by a V-neck in the shape of a heart, the shoulders are highlighted by a bardot collar - a catchy, incredibly sexy, but without losing a drop of elegance silhouette focuses attention on Vivian, whom the viewer now looks at from a different point of view - admiration.

It is noteworthy that during the process of creating the costume, the production studio decided that this dress should be black. But the costume designer initially saw it as red, and after several tests she managed to convince the studio of her choice: “Before the decision was made, we created three different dresses. Poor Julia had to go through a lot of photos and color tests for this dress. Finally, I was able to find the right shade and convince everyone to follow my instructions." The bet paid off. In fact, this outfit is so iconic that it was even exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2014.
