How to care for a skirt made of leather and eco-leather

First, I’ll tell you what the difference is between eco-leather, leather and leatherette (dermantine).

Leather is a natural “canvas”. Eco-leather and leatherette are substitutes. However, the usual leatherette, or dermantin, is of lower quality. It contains polyester. It is cold to the touch, thin and prone to wear and tear.

Eco-leather is leatherette containing polyurethane. This is a slightly rubberized fabric. Famous brands use it in their collections. Such things are cheaper than leather ones, but the quality is not inferior to natural material. If you hold your hand on eco-leather, it warms up, just like the skin. The material has excellent breathability.

• wash at a temperature not exceeding 35 degrees;
• do not squeeze;
• dry only in an upright position, hanging on a hanger.

Method 1 – machine wash. Select the “delicate wash” mode without spinning at 30 degrees with the addition of washing powder for delicate fabrics. A special bag in which the skirt is placed, twisted into a tube without folding, will help maintain its shape and not damage the fabric.

What can cause leather to wrinkle?

It is important to find out the reason why the product crumpled in order to avoid such a mistake in the future. Most often, leather items become wrinkled due to improper storage. In addition to regular cleaning and prevention against moths, they need constant access to air. Therefore, it is better to store them in non-airtight but dense cases - it is also advisable to avoid direct exposure to sunlight. In addition, it is better to store leather items on hangers so that they do not become deformed.

The basin can only be used if the item is short in length and fits into it without folding. Hang the skirt on hangers in a vertical position and wait until it dries naturally.

The best helpers are water and steam

Leather items can be smoothed using water. This is the easiest method, but it will only help with small folds. The item should be carefully hung on hangers and sprinkled or moistened with water. The water must be purified before use, otherwise unsightly whitish stains will remain. If the skirt has not smoothed out in a few hours, you will have to use a steamer or iron.

Steam works well for shallow wrinkles on the skin. The product should be smoothed out as much as possible with your hands and hung on hangers over the bathtub. After this, turn on the hot water and close the room for a while. The main thing is to place things so that water does not get on them.

Leather skirt

A leather skirt is a stylish and original wardrobe item. It will always be popular and remain among the top trends. Genuine leather is very practical and easily maintains its appearance for many years. But it is impossible to wear a thing without regular hygiene procedures, in particular washing. Sooner or later, the question of how to wash a leather skirt arises on its own, just to refresh the item. But leather, despite its high strength and wear resistance, does not tolerate being soaked in water, much less using a washing machine. Moreover, this material is resistant to any moisture, and if it is heavily soiled, it is better to take it to the dry cleaner.

You can carry out the following procedure at home. Dissolve washing powder in warm water. Wipe the surface of the skirt with this mixture with a sponge, squeezing it first so that moisture does not linger on the product. At the end of the process, clean the skirt with a dry cloth, removing any remaining foam and water.

If your leather skirt has a fabric lining, it must be washed separately. Turning the garment inside out, try to separate the skirt itself from the lining fabric as much as possible. For convenience, the item can be hung above the bathtub. Wash the lining by hand using a solution of warm water and powder, being careful not to touch the leather part. The frequency of such a procedure should not exceed 1 time per month. After washing, carefully remove any remaining water using a cloth or soft cloth. Final drying occurs on hangers away from heat sources and direct sunlight. If there is a stain on your leather skirt, take it to a specialty store. There are many different products on sale for the proper care of leather items.

How to iron a leather skirt?

Using an iron

The iron can only iron a smooth surface without inserts or embossing. If some parts of the trousers or dress have an ornament, embossing, or additional elements that form a relief surface, then it is better to use a different processing method. To iron a wrinkled item, you need to follow the following algorithm:

1. Select the minimum heating mode and remove water from the steam container.
2. Turn the item inside out and straighten it on the ironing board. To iron the product from the front side, you must use a lining made of thick fabric or paper.
3. You need to iron carefully, moving the sole slowly. Matter is processed gradually, in small sections. Do not press the device too hard against the surface of the product.
4. After ironing, the lining is removed and the result is assessed. If necessary, repeat the steps.

Folds on leatherette clothing are smoothed out in the same way, but products made from substitutes are ironed exclusively from the wrong side. It is more difficult to straighten creases on artificial fabric, since it is rougher, so it will take more time to work.

Steam or water will help (steamer, “water bath”, cold water)

Steaming can be used when smoothing leather items. However, the algorithm of actions differs slightly from the standard:

1. the product is placed vertically on the hanger;
2. the iron is set to the appropriate mode;
3. when steam begins to be produced, the device is brought no closer than 15 cm to the clothing to treat areas with creases.

The steamer is used in a similar way, only at first a greater distance is maintained between the clothes and the device, about 25 cm. If there is no effect, it decreases to 15 cm. First, small parts are steamed, then large ones. The deepest folds are intensively treated for a few seconds.

Hot water is also effective in removing creases. The product is placed over a basin or other container filled with boiling water. It is better if it is a room with a high level of humidity. Water should not touch clothing. After an hour, the product is transferred to a room with normal humidity and left in a suspended position for another 3 hours.

Fat-based products

Another popular method to help smooth out wrinkles involves using fat-based products. Pharmacy Vaseline is most often used at home. It is applied liberally to areas of the material where creases have formed. Then the product is well straightened and left for 2–4 hours. Vaseline softens the skin, so it becomes elastic and wrinkles straighten out.

Cargo usage

You can iron the product by holding it under pressure. Any objects can be used as cargo. These could be stacked books or bottles filled with water. It is important that the weight of the load is not too heavy so that dents do not appear on the clothes. To smooth out creases using this method, you need:

1. choose a perfectly flat and hard surface;
2. place the product on it and straighten it well;
3. place the load in areas with folds, making sure that the material underneath is completely straightened, otherwise new creases may form;
4. After 10 hours, remove the press.
