The tradition of celebrating the Old New Year dates back to the transition from the Julian calendar (now called the “old style”) to the Gregorian calendar, according to which almost all countries of the world live today. Over the years, the holiday has acquired its own traditions, signs and rituals.
Today, the discrepancy between the old and new calendars is 13 days, which is why the Old New Year is celebrated on the night of January 13-14. Along with this celebration comes our native Slavic holiday of Melanka. According to traditions, people prepare generous kutia, due to which Melanki is also called Generous Evening.
Traditions of the Generous Evening
Melanki and Old New Year dinners are usually celebrated at the table with the whole family; clothes should be neat, well washed and ironed. At the end of the meal, you need to meet with neighbors and friends, close grievances and disagreements with reconciliation.
The celebration itself is rightfully considered not only a family one. This evening, young people dress up as Baba Melanka and walk through the streets and show small performances. According to the script, the woman-heroine is in a quarrel with grandfather Vasily, and also milks a goat, which is a symbol of the goddess of the month. The goat is then sold at the fair. The scene is filled with various characters. During the performance, people are wished goodness in the home, comfort, warmth, prosperity, good health.

On this wonderful day, young people are given a unique chance to create their own family , plan a marriage, and conduct fortune-telling for their betrothed. If a young man was previously denied matchmaking, then during the Generous Evening he has another chance. The main thing is that the beloved is at home at this time.
Late in the evening, closer to midnight, the girls gather in groups and go to give generously . This action is carried out under the windows of houses. It is believed that on this night on the street you can see the new year seeing off the old one.
There is also a ritual of sowing , in which only children take part. The most generous gifts are received by those who knock on the door first (in the morning, of course). Sowing is accompanied by singing songs, telling rhymes, and dancing. All this is aimed at bringing happiness, prosperity, and a good harvest to the house.
Holiday bans: what not to do?
- For a long time, people have believed that the Old New Year should not be celebrated in torn or old clothes. It should be elegant and beautiful, or even better – new. In this case, it is believed that the whole year will be in abundance and abundance.

old New Year
But in the lives of children and adults on the Old New Year, in addition to prohibitions, there can be a lot of interesting things. After all, there are a number of long-standing rituals and traditions for celebration that are quite fascinating and entertaining.
Rituals: how to make the year rich and successful
The first, and perhaps the most famous way to give yourself and your loved ones a happy coming year is a rich dinner . The table must be rich in kutya, meat dishes, pies, homemade dumplings, pancakes and compote. The Old New Year will bring with it what it will be greeted with, so it is better that it be smiles, happiness, wealth, love.
The second ritual is to invite the first sower to the table and treat him to something tasty . If children come in a crowd, you can invite one of them. After sowing, the grain should be swept only in the morning of the Old New Year, and taken to the gate or into the yard.
The third ritual tradition is jumping over a fire . Our ancestors believed that this would cleanse the soul and body from various evil spirits, thus the whole family left all the “dirt” and entered the new year being cleansed.
The fourth, somewhat non-standard tradition is the father playing hide and seek with his children . The process itself goes as follows:
- the mother of the family puts a full bowl of pies on the table;
- the father sits down at the table and hides behind the pies;
- children should ask: “Mom, where is our dad hiding?”;
- the father should answer: “Can’t you see me? God grant that in the coming year the mountain of pies will be as large and there will be wealth in the house.”
The fifth ritual can be performed if there is a river flowing nearby, because the mother of the family will have to go to her at midnight and get water there . Afterwards, the mother must soak the bread in water three times with the words: “It is not the bread that bathes in water, but me and my family in health and strength.” After this, the mother must quietly return home and touch the heads of her relatives with this bread, while saying: “So that there are such great ones as St. Basil the Great.” After this procedure, a coin is thrown into the water. In the morning the whole family should wash themselves with this water.
