What is the difference between tanning in the sun and in a solarium?

Tanning in a horizontal solarium

A good solarium is one that allows you to tan comfortably during the procedure, and ultimately get a perfect tan.

A beautiful, uniform tan of the entire body is guaranteed by specialized tanning studios, as well as premium beauty salons - they, as a rule, work with professional solariums that provide the desired skin tone in a short time, while the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation on the human body are minimized.

There are professional solariums: vertical, horizontal, turbo solariums and solarium chairs.

Features of tanning in a horizontal solarium

Among fans of tanned skin, the horizontal solarium is very popular. Their main advantage is that the session is carried out in a lying position. This allows you to relax tense muscles and enjoy extra rest while warm UV rays glide over your skin, covering it in a seductive tint.

Another advantage of such a solarium is that it allows you to tan completely, including your feet, which tan worse in a vertical solarium.

Tanning in a vertical solarium has the following nuances:

  • During the session you need to lie down correctly. The arms should be lowered along the body, but under no circumstances should they touch it. When sunbathing on your stomach, your hands should be turned with the inside towards the lamps. The legs should be located at a short distance from each other. The head should be kept on its side and turned left and right from time to time.
  • When lying in one position, white spots may remain on areas of the skin where the body was tightly adjacent to the panel. To prevent this from happening, you must turn over periodically during the procedure.
  • If your facial skin tone is darker than the covered areas of your body, your facial tan may end up being too dark. In this case, you can use a solarium with a function to turn off tanning in the face area.

Rules of conduct in the solarium:

  • Before the procedure, clean your face of decorative cosmetics;
  • Before entering the booth, remove your jewelry;
  • cover the piercing with special stickers;
  • cover tattoos and large moles with stickers;
  • Apply a thin layer of a protective agent (cream, lotion) to the body;
  • put a hat/scarf on your head;
  • Cover your breasts with protective caps (nipples with stickers);
  • Wear special glasses for tanning in a solarium;
  • periodically change your position, lying on your back, stomach, sideways;
  • do not exceed the permissible time spent in the solarium;
  • After tanning, apply cosmetic oil to your skin.

Which solarium to choose? Recommendations for salons

02.07.2018 16:41:00

Solarium regulars understand the uniformity of tanning, types of lamps and power levels just as well as specialists. They are demanding not only in terms of tanning quality, but also in terms of comfort during sessions. Therefore, when choosing a solarium, it is important to first of all focus on the most sophisticated client. Which models to choose? About this in our short review.

There are horizontal and vertical models to choose from. An undeniable advantage of horizontal solariums is the opportunity to completely relax during a session. Some visitors specifically choose salons with cabins of this particular configuration. The vertical cabin takes up less space, this is its main advantage for salon owners. For clients, this is already a familiar type of model; there are such models in every salon. The main thing is not even this, because the quality of tanning largely depends on the configuration and options of a particular model. We have chosen for review 2 models of solariums from the Dutch manufacturer Luxura – Luxura X7 II 42 Sli High Intensive and Luxura V6 42 XL Intensive + Audio MP3.

Solarium horizontal Luxura X7 II 42 Sli High Intensive

The Luxura X7 II 42 Sli High Intensive model is equipped with all possible options for maximum effect with premium comfort.

Luxura X7 from Harpo is a powerful premium model. This is a choice of expensive salons, where there is no place for cheap solariums. There is no need to talk about exquisite design, it is obvious. When it comes to technology, the solarium can be customized to suit the requirements of each client, this is one of the greatest advantages of the model. If necessary, you can turn off the face lamps and set up the back FLEX (shoulder tanning system). The touch screen control system is simple and clear, there is a programmable session timer.

Luxura X7 is a combined type solarium, equipped with 24 100W lamps, 18 180W lamps and 400 W facial lamps. The solarium operates almost silently thanks to an intelligent cooling system and has excellent Ambient FlowLight lighting. There are many additional options in the form of CliMax conditioner, aromatherapy (Xsens with ocean/floral/sandalwood scents), dripless shower (Qsens), Smart Voice voice control. Luxura X7 is equipped with a Sound Around audio system with the ability to connect your own mp3. Your clients can play their favorite tracks rather than listen to boring relaxation music.

The solarium is equipped with an easy-to-open glass system and a dust filter system. There are 2 fans - one for the body (5 levels of adjustment), the other for the face - with the same number of levels.

Ventilation is a very important criterion when choosing. Without good ventilation, the lamps will take longer to cool down, and a person will begin to suffocate from the stuffiness!

Vertical solarium Luxura V6 42 XL Intensive + Audio MP

Luxura V6 42 XL Intensive is a luxurious professional solarium. The cabin is high and well lit (the height of the lamp is 2 meters!). This is important because clients often complain about low and dark tanning booths.

Upon entering, the lighting turns on automatically like all solariums. An undoubted advantage of this model is that the lighting does not turn off automatically after the end of the session; a person can safely leave the cabin.

The cabin has a display for personal settings for a tanning session - the client can switch from one to another. It is very comfortable.

Standard equipment includes 48 XL lamps. This is more than enough to get an even and beautiful tan. The basic package includes a Smart Touch control panel, a digital timer, a powerful 3-stage body fan that can be adjusted to the desired degree of airflow, an internal timer, 2 counters (resettable and non-resettable), and a connector for an external control panel.

The ergonomics of the cabin are thought out to the smallest detail - the door opens smoothly with a small opening radius, which saves space and also allows the beams to be evenly distributed inside the cabin.

The basic configuration of the cabin does not pretend to be a luxury solarium, but the functionality can be gradually expanded to a premium one. In particular, you can purchase an additional Ambient Flow Light panel - it creates a very pleasant atmosphere in the cabin. Or complement the cabin with the Xsens aromatherapy system and the Qsens dripless shower, which disperses the sea breeze during the session.

And, of course, one of the most important options is a speaker system with the ability to play your own playlist (My MP3), stereo speakers. An additional set includes a changing cabin.

For those who value design, there is a choice of colors for decorative inserts (gold, blue or fuchsia). You can order gold and fuchsia models with rhinestones - the so-called “Glamour” version.

Myths about horizontal and vertical cabins

It is worth mentioning some misconceptions that cannot be ignored, as they create demand. Fans of tanning salons say that in vertical booths you get a more even tan. This is not true. The quality of tanning depends on many nuances, including skin characteristics, type of lamps (low, high pressure or combined), tanning products. You can get an even tan using both horizontal and vertical booths.

There is an opinion that horizontal ones are less hygienic than vertical ones, where you sunbathe while standing, almost without touching the coverings, so there is less risk of becoming infected with something. Whoever says this does not take into account that in vertical cabins a lot of bacteria also accumulate on the walls, floor, handrails and on all surfaces of the cabin with which the client came into contact.

Solarium employees are required to disinfect after each session. Moreover, processing must be carried out with special means that have passed state registration. In some salons, where there are several booths, you can always monitor whether cleaning is being carried out or not while you are waiting for your turn. So, if you value your reputation, choose not only a nice, comfortable cabin with many functions, but also responsible employees who monitor cleanliness.

Comparison of vertical and horizontal solariums

Fans of tanning in solariums vied with each other in praising both vertical and horizontal solariums. However, there are many who claim that artificial tanning in a horizontal solarium is much better than a vertical one and vice versa.

Advantages and disadvantages

So, let's figure out how a vertical solarium differs from a horizontal one, what is their fundamental difference and which solarium is better.

The main difference between solariums is their configuration. Actually, the names speak for themselves: in a horizontal solarium, the lamps are located in a horizontal position, respectively, the tanning procedure is carried out in a lying position. In a vertical solarium, the booth and lamps are located vertically, and tanning is done in a standing position.

Advantages of a vertical solarium

  • quick tanning;
  • spacious cabin;
  • lack of contact with solarium panels (glass, walls);
  • the ability to move around your own axis, to dance.

Flaws

  • the level of comfort is lower than that of a horizontal solarium;
  • the skin on the legs tans less intensely than on the upper body.

Advantages of a horizontal solarium

  • comfort during the procedure;
  • the opportunity to relax and unwind;
  • minimal risk of burns;
  • the cost of one procedure is less compared to a vertical solarium.

Flaws

  • tan with the effect of “white” spots (in areas where the body is in close contact with the surface of the camera, the skin will receive a lighter shade);
  • limited capsule length;
  • closed space;
  • duration of the procedure (radiation in horizontal solariums is less intense compared to vertical, which is why the session lasts twice as long);
  • hygiene conditions.

Determine skin type and frequency of procedures

The type of skin primarily determines how long the tanning sessions can be, how long it will take to get a beautiful skin tone, and how high the risk of getting burns is.

  • Skin type I, also known as “Celtic”.

Owners of the Celtic type of appearance are distinguished by very fair skin. The natural hair color of such people is blond or light red, there are a lot of freckles both on the face and on the chest and shoulders. The skin of people with type 1 quickly turns red and burns in the sun, so they can spend no more than 3 minutes in a solarium for the first time.

Subsequent sessions can be made longer. But sunbathing for more than 10 minutes without the risk of burns is unlikely. Maximum number of sessions 2 per week.

In principle, some experts generally do not recommend visiting a solarium or sunbathing for owners of the Celtic type.

  • Skin type II, which is also known as “fair-skinned European.”

Owners of this type of appearance are distinguished by fair skin, light or brown hair, a small number of freckles, and light eyes. The skin of such people tans, but the risk of getting burns is high. The first session for such people should last 3-5 minutes.

The time of subsequent procedures can be gradually increased to 10-15 minutes. You can sunbathe 2-3 times a week, provided that the procedures are not combined with prolonged exposure to active sun.

  • Skin type III or “dark-skinned European”.

People with the third skin type are distinguished by the presence of dark brown or brown hair, gray or brown eyes. Skin color can range from light to dark. People with the third skin type burn much less often than people with the first and second types. Therefore, there will be noticeably fewer restrictions on visiting the solarium. Owners of the third skin type can start tanning from 7 minutes and then increase the session time to 20 minutes. You can sunbathe 2-3 times a week.

  • Skin type IV, also known as “Mediterranean”.

Owners of type 4 appearance are dark-skinned, dark-haired, and brown-eyed. In this case, you should not take the maximum time for the first procedure. Still, you should give your skin time to get used to it. Then you can safely stay there for 20 minutes and enjoy a deep, “juicy” tan.
