Who can be called modern style icons?

What is a style icon?

The concept of “Style Icon” first appeared in the 20th century and referred to a narrow circle of truly outstanding women. She could not be called just a famous person with good taste. No, it had to be a woman who was distinguished not only by the above, but also by the magnitude of her personality. We all know these women, whose images transcend time. They inspire and are the epitome of fashion themselves.

Today the concept of “Style Icon” is used in a broader sense. We call icons celebrities, it girls, street stylers, whose images sink into the soul and evoke a great response from people. Let's take a look at them?

Bright style icons of the 21st century

Sarah Jessica Parker or Carrie Bradshaw

When talking about Sarah Jessica Parker as a style icon, many people, without realizing it, mean Carrie Bradshaw. After all, it is the image of Kerry, created by the costume designer for “Sex in HD” Patricia Field, that can be called iconic. Parker herself does not have good taste or successful images in everyday or even social life.

    Victoria Beckham

Victoria and her eponymous brand have come a long way to conquer the world. No one could have thought that this outrageous brunette, whom many consider the embodiment of bad taste, would deserve the status of a style icon. Laconic lines, simple shapes, elegance - this is what characterizes Victoria Beckham's style today.

    Blake Lovely

Blake Lively achieved fashion icon status after playing fashionista Serena in the TV series Gossip Girl. However, the actress herself is not inferior to her on-screen heroine in her sense of fashion and regularly pleases fans with stunning looks. It is noteworthy that even during pregnancy, Blake always looked 100%.

    Emma Watson

British rose Emma Watson has won not only the love of fans, but also recognition in the fashion world. The actress was the face of such famous brands as Burberry, Chanel, Lancom. Emma has excellent taste, a sense of appropriateness and is deservedly called a young style icon of the 21st century.

    Dita Von Teese

This sophisticated woman, as if stepped out of a 40s movie, has a 100% recognizable original style. Feminine dresses, perfect hair, snow-white skin, bright lipstick and a wasp waist - these are the constant attributes of Dita Von Teese's style. An undisputed style icon and simply an amazing woman.

    Kate Middlelot

The world was waiting for the appearance of the “new Princess Diana” and she became the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton. Fans immediately described the duchess as a style icon, but is this really so? Fashion experts differ in their opinions; Kate’s execution of royal protocol in clothing is painfully boring. Maybe it's a new member of the Windsor family...

    Meghan Markle

To say that Meghan Markle has conquered the world is an understatement! This unconventional girl in every sense of the word married a real prince and proved that the impossible is possible.

Megan was so beloved by people that she was instantly placed on a pedestal next to Princess Di (displacing Kate). The so-called “Meghan effect” even arose in society - women literally swept off store shelves the clothes that Megan wore when going out. But the Duchess of Sussex really dresses amazingly! Moreover, he continues to do the unthinkable - to introduce 21st century trends into the duchess’s mandatory dress code!

Style icons of the past. Ladies. Foreign.

    Greta Garbo
The paradox of this woman is that she, intentionally or in obedience to her ambiguous nature, combined feminine charm and facial beauty with a masculine figure silhouette. Dictatorial minimalism in detail

    .
    The strictest black suit
. They say that the cut was deliberate: it somehow emphasized the chest and waist. But this emphasis was so imperceptible that it only allowed the gaze to move from the figure to the face without much fear.

Face... This is Greta Garbo's style . Antique clarity and perfect simplicity of lines in everything. Not tenderly, but imperiously and slightly mockingly outlined, the mouth with the same richly bright lipstick. This is the mouth that women all over the world tried to draw, even once looking at the movie screen. And eyes. They contained all the world's sorrow, cynicism, and defenselessness. We can say that Greta Garbo's style is very relevant today. Strict black suits for businesswomen combined with exquisite frilled blouses will allow you to go straight from the boardroom to the nightclub.

    Coco Chanel

Someone shouted about the equality of women and called for a revolutionary emancipation movement. Someone stormed men's fortresses, conquering physics and airplanes. Coco Chanel - just wearing a men's suit

. All the bastions collapsed. Coco cuts complex hairstyles. And before us are the heads of girls, boys, teenage girls. The revolutionary women are delighted with “equality”. The men are delighted - the lady, remaining sophisticated in life, suddenly turned into a young girl, touchingly fresh and monstrously seductive.

And - “black square from Chanel” - just a small black dress. Coco Chanel revealed a secret that men have known for a long time: the less clothes say, the better a woman can be heard. Coco herself, clinking her scissors and cutting something off again, was guided by only two criteria. The first is convenience and health. Second - will a man like it?

    Audrey Hepburn

The eyes are huge, wisely trusting and defenseless. Looking at them, the most desperate cynic will experience, at least for a moment, romantic delight and sadness about something unearthly and inaccessible. Defeated by Audrey’s gaze, the world has since resignedly and enthusiastically accepted her every gesture, every detail of her costume, every feature of her manner as a standard.

Audrey Hepburn probably knew perfectly well what suited her. Or maybe everything just suited her. Baggy country trousers only emphasized the 50 centimeters of the waist. The work plaid shirt, combined with the insane weightlessness of the arms and neck, was more likely to expose the queen than the gauze dresses and tiaras. Givenchy's style - comfort and simplicity - seemed to be specially created for Audrey. There is nothing provocatively sexual in her image. She is childishly asexual. Purity, prayer and self-restraint - this is the inner message that Audrey followed all her life, and created an image that struck the sinful world.

She left us a lot. We periodically move away from and return to - bell skirts

    ,
    tiaras
    ,
    ballet flats
    and
    leggings
    ,
    sunglasses “a la dragonfly”
    and
    short doll-like bangs
. Even wide – “natural” – eyebrows are also Audrey. She did not replicate the subtle hints of eyebrows that were fashionable at the time of her rise. She obeyed only the demands of her beauty.

    Grace Kelly

Her name is synonymous with impeccability. The era, origin and circumstances required it. Worshiping Grace Kelly, the queen, she was also idolized as a style icon... Every move was watched not only by the paparazzi, but by all the women of that time. The slightest change in Grace's appearance was followed by a lightning-fast turn in the fashion trends of those years.

Mix everything, add sophistication, season with the hot East and dilute with the cold wind of the Arctic - God, how simple and inaccessible this recipe is! Well, try it, try it - mix white gloves and a turban with “cucumbers”. Add to them fancy cut lines and pearls with gold...

    Twiggy

No forms! Classic - sad! Ladies to the right, gentlemen to the left? Nothing like this! Mix the men's and women's ready-to-wear sections and witness the birth of a new world. Swing, freedom, unisex!

Appearing in New York in 1967, a fragile girl with huge naive eyes immediately conquered the fashion world and literally turned it on its head. With her appearance, Twiggy showed and proved to the whole world that the time of models with outstanding forms is gone forever. The successes of the “thin” model were closely followed by the entire fashion business. They liked to gossip about her personal life, at the same time both believing and not believing in the capabilities of “this girl.”

Did Twiggy herself become a trendsetter ? Or fashion accepted her as its icon, but Trostinka was imitated, millions of girls went on diets and cut their hair, putting it in a “cap”. Having turned the usual view of beauty in women, the image created by Twiggy also changed the views of men, who began to pay more attention to thin girls.

    Catherine Deneuve

Deneuve embodies the image of a woman who is conservative in her affections and at the same time passionate about new fashion.

. Millions, hundreds of millions of women were ready to follow the spectacularly reserved blonde. Saint Laurent's muse became a role model and style model for many years. Subtle colors, amazingly clear cut, expressive minimum of details. And next to her: a bright, languid and alluring friend. Transparent blouses on a naked body... unheard of, daring and... oh, how wonderful!

Is Catherine Deneuve's style classic and boring? Oh, you just don't know how difficult it is: to stay within limits, avoiding routine and boredom. What it's like to personify a fragile woman, resilient in the face of adversity, from behind whom a sensual predator peeks out with the grace and grip of a tigress. Now the world understands the essence of the differences between barely covered eroticism and open obscenity. The world has made colossal money from eroticism, feelings and desire.

Classic and erotic – Catherine Deneuve’s style is timeless.

    Jacqueline Kennedy

Jackie—that’s what Jacqueline’s contemporaries called her—is a shining example of a woman who knew her strengths and weaknesses well and skillfully played them up with the help of her wardrobe. Without being a canonical beauty, she became a real style icon, the embodiment of elegance and grace.

Having a low neck, Jacqueline chose dresses with V-necks or asymmetrical dresses with one shoulder. Jackie happily showed off her slender, toned arms.

Jacqueline was not afraid to open her knees - before this, no first lady had dared to undertake such a “fashionable feat”. Following Lady Kennedy, many wives of politicians (and even the Queen of Great Britain!) slightly shortened their skirts and dresses. Jackie often wore gloves: short ones during the day, elbow-length with evening dresses. They not only gave clothes a special aristocracy.

Jacqueline's motto: "The dress should be loose enough to make it clear that you are a lady, and tight enough to make it obvious that you are a woman."

Whose style do you like best?

    The most stylish

    Renata Litvinova

    Anna Dello Russo

    Carine Roitfeld

    Street style icons

    Olivia Palermo

Who is this girl and what does she do? It’s unlikely that anyone knows the answer, and who cares! The most important thing is that Olivia knows how to dress stunningly and has an excellent sense of style. A classic example of how you can become a style icon in the 21st century without having flashy features or popularity.

    Miroslava Duma

Let's continue the it girl theme with our compatriot Miroslava Duma. Miroslava started out as a fashion columnist in glossy magazines, now she is a regular visitor to all fashion events in the world and a recognized streetstyle icon.

    Chiara Ferragni

The most successful fashion blogger in the world is in front of you. Chiara Ferragni twice made it onto Forbes' list of the world's richest people under 30, and she started by posting photos of her looks on her blog. Alexa Chung

Editor of British Vogue, TV presenter and just a notorious fashionista. The girl gathered an army of fans who proclaimed her a modern style icon.

    Style icon

The world of fashion is very diverse and multifaceted. Many styles and trends, many suggestions and recommendations - how to understand all this in order to have your own unique image? Answering this question, first of all, it is worth paying attention to those who are called icons of fashion and style.

Style icons of the 20th century

There are names whose authority in the fashion world has been unquestioned for many decades. Coco Chanel became such an authority and truly a fashion icon. Who doesn't know her little black muslin dress with a long string of pearls? It is still relevant today; designers are just adding some modern nuances. And her famous costumes? The great Coco gave the world not just clothes, she gave her own style - a style of elegance, beauty and femininity.

The style icons of the 50s of the last century, of course, include Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. Jacqueline Kennedy is still a role model, whose style has always been recognizable by its main details - gloves, sunglasses, a pillbox hat, an a-line dress and a jacket with three-quarter sleeves.

It is no coincidence that Marilyn Monroe is also called a style icon. Who hasn’t admired and still doesn’t admire her very feminine, but also overtly sexy outfits? Her style is the embodiment of love and sensuality.

It is impossible not to mention the Soviet film actress Lyubov Orlova. A truly heroic woman. To be a style icon, a favorite of millions at that time and in that country, is great courage.

One more great actress, the unsurpassed Catherine Deneuve, can rightfully be considered a style icon of the 60s. She was a friend and muse of the great Yves Saint Laurent. Her style – that same French one – drove millions of women crazy. Classic sophisticated jackets, midi skirts, calm colors, impeccable cut, neat hair styling are the basis of her image. Like a real Frenchwoman, Madame could create a feminine and seductive image in tightly buttoned clothes. The actress still looks great despite her age, presenting the world with a role model.

Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Twiggy (Leslie Hornby) - these are the names that became style icons of the 60s of the last century, although, perhaps, they remain so now.

Style icons of the 21st century

The new century can also be proud of its outstanding personalities in the world of style and fashion. Everyone knows the names of Angelina Jolie, who always amazes with the sophistication and elegance of her outfits; Kate Moss, who manages to look worth $9 million (her annual income) in skinny jeans, a top and a distressed leather jacket; Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen with their eclectic chic.

Kate Middleton can also be considered a modern style icon. Who, if not her, should be a role model. After all, she became the wife of not just a prince, but the son of Diana Spencer. The same Lady Di, who still remains the unsurpassed Queen of Style. Intentionally or unwittingly, Kate has to live up to the status of Princess Diana's daughter-in-law. Recently, some fashion critics have begun to rank the wife of US President Michelle Obama among modern style icons.

How to become a style icon?

There are no strict rules, laws or principles to create your unique image. Having basic, universal items in your wardrobe that are well tailored to your figure is the basis for creating your own unique style. And, perhaps, the most important thing is that you should not become a victim of fashion, chasing expensive or branded things. Being stylish doesn't mean having only expensive things. Even the incomparable Chanel said: “Lack of funds is not a reason not to have style.” Many stylish women are far from the richest. A sense of proportion and taste is the basis of style.

    Style icons of 2020

Has the word influencers set your teeth on edge yet? After all, we will be talking about them. These young girls with multimillion-dollar online audiences and million-dollar bank accounts are ruling the fashion scene today.

One of the Kardashian sisters (on the maternal side), at 23 years old, is already a world celebrity, whom millions look up to. Anything she wears will instantly sell out. Needless to say, such people become not just fashion icons, they become fashion itself.

    Kylie Jenner

Want to see the youngest billionaire in history? That way. Kylie Jenner is a 21-year-old socialite, model, influencer, entrepreneur, creator of her personal cosmetics brand, the youngest billionaire in history and, of course, a style icon.

    Kim Kardashian

It’s impossible without the most famous (but not the richest) Kardashian sister... Half of planet Earth is watching Kim, her style is being examined under a microscope - naturally, it is doomed to be canonical. Kim's husband Kanye West had to ask his wife to walk in front of the cameras just once to advertise his own fashion collection. We think it’s clear that the collection sold like hotcakes?

    Bella Hadid

Top model, face of Dior and Bulgari, multimillionaire blogger, influencer.

This book will tell the reader about what exactly these famous women did and what they are famous for. This is truly a mirror of fashion, reflecting how the tastes and preferences of women have changed, from representatives of the upper classes to ordinary women. The author talks very interestingly about this “evolution” from young ladies “having no rights” tied up in tight corsets and bodices, to “free” women in loose-fitting clothes (sometimes even on a naked body).” (@brunhilda on LiveLib.ru)

How to become a style icon: 5 important rules

    1. Be yourself A style icon is about individuality. It is impossible to become one if you strive to imitate someone.
    2. Be well-groomed You cannot become a style icon if you have a dirty bun of hair on your head and dirt under your nails. Grooming should become your second self.
    3. Keep up with the times Your clothes must be modern and stylish. There is no need to chase trends or labels, just be “in the know” and follow modern fashion trends.
    4. Play sports and eat right Yes, there are style icons among plus size girls, but health and a slim figure will never be superfluous.
    5. Find your feature Find your strong side, make a feature out of it and present it as effectively as possible. You have to be remembered for something and stand out from the rest.

“The new G-Class raises the bar even higher in all key respects – be it dynamics on and off the road, comfort or telematics. Thus, our “deserved” automobile class is best prepared to continue writing its success story. In short, the new G-Class is the same G-Class, only better,” said Ola Källenius, Member of the Management Board of Daimler AG, responsible for Research and Development at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Working on the new G-Class was extremely challenging for the development team. “Technically improving a design icon like the G Class was both a challenge and an opportunity for us. Every part and every screw has been tested on a test bench,” explained Dr. Gunnar Güthenke, responsible for the SUV product group at Mercedes-Benz. “On the body side, we focused on improving the vehicle's structural rigidity, as well as the chassis and transmission connections to the ladder frame,” he added.

The equipment will include many new solutions, such as LED headlights, assistance systems, luxurious interior trim with leather seats and a new suspension. For particularly discerning customers, options such as the exclusive Plus interior with leather door trim will offer even more exclusivity.

    G-Class with a modern twist

The G-Class, the executive SUV from Mercedes-Benz, has long been considered a design icon. Since 1979, its appearance has not undergone significant changes. The elements that made the G-Class a design icon, both then and today, perform very specific functions and shape its unique appearance. They are also present in the new incarnation of the G-Class: a striking handle on the door, which slams shut with a characteristic sound, robust protective moldings on the body, an exposed spare wheel on the tailgate and conspicuous direction indicators. Combined with the angular silhouette, these extraordinary details give it a special look.

The refined design of the G-Class follows the philosophy of “Sensual Simplicity” while remaining true to the character of its original incarnation. So, in the new generation, the door hinges located on the outside and the “overlay” hood are reproduced. This design icon among SUVs has been technically refined for decades without changing much in appearance, but with this latest update it takes a leap into a new era – both in terms of technology and design. Being 53 mm longer and 121 mm wider, the new G Class looks even more impressive – both on and off-road.

The new G-Class feels more like it was cast in metal than ever before. All planes are drawn sharper and stretched tighter, and the quality of workmanship of external surfaces has become even higher. The result is narrower and more precise joints, as well as more harmonious transitions. In addition, the wheel arches and bumper now look not like overhead parts, but as a single unit with the body.

    Interior: a true style icon

While on the outside this benchmark classic SUV has undergone only subtle modifications, on the inside the G-Class features a fundamentally transformed, modern interior that, as a reflection of the exterior, reinterprets the classic heritage. With both the character of a true SUV and high-quality luxury equipment, the G-Class has always been able to bring these two extremes into a harmonious combination. Only high-quality materials are used here, recognizable at first sight and at the first touch. Every detail is made with the utmost care inherent in hand-made production.

Anyone who enters the interior of a G-Class will find many elements characteristic of its exterior design. Take, for example, its round headlights, which echo the shape of the side air deflectors. Or the repeating shape of its turn signals in the speakers, which has become its specific stylistic feature. Typical of the G-Class is the presence of a grab handle on the front passenger's side, as well as the three differential lock switches highlighted in chrome. Both of these details have been carefully optimized and retain their role as defining elements in the interior design.

An extremely readable instrument cluster with a completely new design as standard, featuring timeless analogue round gauges housed in “wells”. Fans of classic round instruments will also not be disappointed with the interior of the new G-Class. As in the new E-Class and S-Class, the instrument panel can be customized with a large display with virtual instruments directly in the driver's field of vision, as well as a central display above the center console. Thus, located under a common outer glass, two displays with a diagonal of 12.3 inches each visually merge into a single widescreen dashboard. The driver can both vary the display, choosing between three different styles “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”, and customize the display of the required information and its display options.

With haptic feedback and additional audible confirmation through the speakers, the driver can use the touch control panel on the center console without taking their eyes off the road. Direct access keys in front of the controller for frequently used functions, as well as an optional auxiliary systems control panel located above the rotary light switch, complete the control options. The driver sits close to the windshield, allowing him to enjoy excellent all-round visibility, unobstructed by the steering wheel.
