Natalia Vodianova: “They told my sister: “First get cured, and then go to the cafe”
The Internet space was shocked by a blatant incident that occurred in Nizhny Novgorod with the sister of the famous model Natalia Vodianova . During a walk, 27-year-old Oksana Vodianova wanted to drink and went into a nearby cafe with her nanny. The girl, however, did not have time to quench her thirst. The director of the establishment demanded that a client with autism and her companion leave the premises, claiming that her appearance was frightening the guests. The unwanted visitors left the cafe, accompanied by security.
The model’s mother did not want to dedicate her eldest daughter to the unpleasant details of the incident with her sick sister. The world-famous model learned about the blasphemous act from the media. The famous philanthropist instantly reacted to what happened, talking about what happened to Oksana on her Facebook page: “It’s hard for me to talk about this, but I understand that this is a signal for society that cannot be ignored. Yesterday, when my mother was working, the nanny went for a walk with my sister Oksana. Oksana was diagnosed with autism and cerebral palsy several years ago, my sister is a person with developmental disabilities. She can walk for several hours in a row, sometimes even 6 hours, and usually mom and nanny stop at a cafe to rest in the shade from a long walk, drink tea (Oksana does not drink water or juice) and go on a walk.
Yesterday it was very hot and after about an hour of walking around the Avtozavodsky Park of Culture and Leisure, they, tired, went into a street cafe called “Flamingo”. It was a weekday, so there was no one in the cafe except one customer. The waitress immediately approached them and said that they couldn’t just sit in the cafe, they needed to order something. The nanny ordered a glass of tea, in response the waitress said that tea in the establishment is only in large teapots and costs 300 rubles. The nanny thought it was very expensive, and she bought Oksana a chocolate bar. Suddenly, the owner of the cafe approached them and rudely demanded: “Let's leave. You are scaring away all our customers. Go get treatment and cure your child. And then come to a public place.” The nanny apologized, answering that the child was special and it would be better if she rested and then left on her own.
The owner refused to wait and said he was calling security. Mom or nanny have never been kicked out of a cafe before. Therefore, the nanny called her mother in shock to understand what to do in this situation, since she knew that it was useless to force Oksana to do something.
While my mother was driving, a security guard stood next to Oksana. Until my mother arrived, he stood next to her the whole time and said: “Leave, otherwise we will call a psychiatric hospital, an ambulance and lock you in the basement.” The only client of the cafe, who was already paying at the bar, asked the waitress to leave the child alone. When the mother arrived, there were already three security guards near Oksana - huge men. Mom tried to find out what exactly was the matter. Having learned that Oksana was being insulted and kicked out of the cafe, she began to shame them, explaining that the child was resting, not bothering anyone, neatly dressed, that Oksana was clean and not smelly. She said that my sister doesn’t scare anyone away, and besides, the cafe is completely empty, that our Oksana has special needs, she should rest and go herself, and if she is forcibly dragged out of the cafe, she will become worried, nervous, maybe even cry or scream.
When my mother tried to explain this to the owner, he only told her: “Take me away. First cure, and then come to public places.”
After that, one of the security guards approached my mother and demanded that she leave the cafe, took her by the elbow and threatened to call the police. Mom, naturally, took Oksana and the nanny out of the cafe, and then returned to the owner and told him that she would not leave this issue like that. When my mother approached the central exit of the park, a police squad with machine guns was already waiting for her and Oksana. Law enforcement officers strictly ordered: “Stop. Come with us to the department. We're arresting you for petty hooliganism."
Oksana did not get into the car, she was very hot and tired. Then my mother was taken alone to the local police station, but there they recognized her by sight and were surprised, saying that they would not get involved with this case. Then my mother was taken to the central department, where she wrote a counter-statement against the owner of the Flamingo cafe.
I am very sorry for my mother, my sister and our nanny, who withstood this situation so steadfastly. The owner of this cafe should have been taken to the police station for insult and discrimination. I want to appeal to each of us, let's help people with developmental disabilities and their families be happy.
Let's help their teachers and specialists who work with them every day. It is necessary to ensure that their work does not end outside schools and rehabilitation centers, and that you and I are a continuation of this work. Let's help non-profit organizations and charitable foundations that work every day to build an inclusive society in Russia.
Natalia Vodianova spoke about her sister, who suffers from autism
Supermodel Natalia Vodianova has never hidden the fact that her younger sister is autistic. Oksana suffers from a severe form of the disease, but over the years she has become more open to others. Natalia's children love to communicate with her.
As Natalya recalls, as a child she was very ashamed of Oksana. It is very difficult to live with a disabled child. Moreover, in those days people did not know how to raise such children.
“Until the age of 10, Oksana did not know how to ask to go to the toilet, so she could do her business right on the street without warning anyone. We didn't have money for diapers. When this happened, people often reacted very negatively or with disdain. At these moments I was very ashamed, I hid my sister’s head under my arm and tried to take her home as soon as possible,” Vodianova said in an interview with Hello!
According to Natalya, her sister loved to mix everything into one pile - her clothes, toys, flour, butter, textbooks. Now she is 26 years old, she has friends and even a close friend from the Naked Heart Foundation, which was founded by the famous sister.

Supermodel and founder of the Naked Heart Foundation for children, Natalia Vodianova, took part in the international conference “Effective Technologies in the Education of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)” on April 2, World Autism Awareness Day.
According to Vodianova, Nizhny Novgorod was not chosen as the venue for the conference by chance.
— We have been holding the forum in Moscow for five years now. They decided to gather here because Nizhny Novgorod is the second city after St. Petersburg, which has the best specialists and methods for working with children with autistic disorder,” explained the top model.

Natalya Vodianova noted that children with special needs are less likely to be called sick, and the attitude towards them in public places has also improved. According to Vodianova, the problems are not with children with autism, but with adults who do not know how to behave correctly with them.
- We don't have autism. This is a condition, and you can live with it, says the founder of the Naked Heart Foundation. “Special children don’t focus on what the average person pays attention to.” And our specialists help to shift this focus to the right things.

Let us remember that in August 2020, Vodianova’s younger sister Oksana, who suffers from autism, was kicked out of the car. Then this story received wide publicity. Natalya Vodianova emphasized that that situation also had positive experiences.
— Referring to the case with my sister Oksana, people were able to talk openly about the situation in another city or region. And thus the topic became interesting and important. And yes, this began to change society’s attitude towards such children,” Vodianova told reporters.
Vodianova responded to the incident with her autistic sister
Natalya Vodianova commented on her Facebook page on the incident that occurred in a cafe in Nizhny Novgorod between her mother and the owner of the establishment, RG reports.
“The situation that happened yesterday with my sister Oksana is not an isolated incident; unfortunately, this is the reality in which all families raising children with special needs live. It’s hard for me to talk about this, but I understand that this is a signal for society that is impossible not to hear…. I am very sorry for my mother and for Oksana, and for our nanny, who withstood this situation so steadfastly. This owner should have been taken to the department for insulting his honor and dignity and discrimination, why did they take my mother? I want to appeal to each of us, let's help people with developmental disabilities and their families be happy. Let's help their teachers and specialists who work with them every day to make sure that their work does not end outside schools and rehabilitation centers, and that we are a continuation of this work. Let's help non-profit organizations and charitable foundations that work every day to build inclusive society in Russia, by the fact that we ourselves want to become this very society,” Vodianova wrote.
Meanwhile, KP writes that the police are now looking into the conflict. Note that the cause of the conflict was the illness of Vodianova’s sister, Oksana. The girl is a disabled person from childhood, suffering from autism and cerebral palsy. It was because of this that the administration of the establishment asked visitors to leave. The girl’s mother said that when they passed by one of the cafes called “Flamingo”, the girl became thirsty.
“Oksana just walked into the cafe,” said Oksana’s mother Larisa Viktorovna. “She stood at the bar and didn’t bother anyone. The nanny at this time asked for water for her. And immediately the barmaid, then the barbecue man, and the security guards approached her. They began to rudely push her out with the words: “There is no need for sick people to go to decent establishments! You will scare away all our clients!” The nanny immediately called me. Of course, I was beside myself..."
However, the cafe employees have a different version of events.
“The girl entered the cafe, but not just to the bar, but into the back room,” said the security guard at the Flamingo cafe. “The employees approached her and asked her to get out of there. And she started banging her head against the wall! Then she finally walked out the door and sat down on the paving stones by the bar. I sat there for an hour, with the nanny nearby. We called the park security. And then her mother arrived and started a scandal!”
In addition, the guards justified their harshness by fearing an inadequate reaction from the visitor.
The police also commented on the current situation: “A verbal altercation ensued between the girl’s mother and the security representatives, turning into swearing and insults,” the police explained. “When everyone’s patience ran out, the police and employees of a private security company were called. The police arrived and brought both parties to the department for investigation. At the department, as a result, Larisa Kusakina wrote a statement against the guards, who wrote a statement against her. An inspection is currently underway. And Larisa Viktorovna is very worried about what happened.”
Let us remember that Natalia Vodianova was born in 1982 in Gorky. At the age of 16, she was enrolled in a modeling agency, where she was advised to learn English. At one of the screenings, a representative of an international agency noticed her and offered her a job in Paris. She was married to British aristocrat Justin Portman, thanks to which in England they add Honourable (honorable) to her name.
According to the British press, Natalya is one of the 300 richest people in the country. In Russia, she founded the Naked Hearts charity foundation to build playgrounds and help children with developmental disabilities. In total, the foundation built more than 100 playgrounds and parks in 68 cities of Russia, as well as the first unique playground for children with mental disabilities.
