Actress Lyubava Greshnova: “A woman, becoming a mother, becomes more tender”

Actress Lyubava Greshnova: “A woman, becoming a mother, becomes more tender”Lyubava Greshnova Lyubava Greshnova was born in Kharkov. The viewer knows the actress from such films and TV series as “Family for a Year”, “Random Bride”, “I Will Give You Victory”, “Deceived Wives Club”, “Wounded Heart”, “Ekaterina. Takeoff”, “Glory”, “Beautiful Life”, “Fifth Floor without Elevator”, “Shadow”, “Moving”, “Bring Back My Love”, “My Friend’s Bride”, etc.

— Lyubava, does beauty help in the acting profession, or does it sometimes get in the way?

- Rather, it interferes. It can even ruin someone's career as a woman. When I was still studying at the theater university, it was believed that if a student is beautiful, she is a priori mediocre. These are certainly old prejudices. I love the story with Charlize Theron, when she, fighting off the roles of beauties, went to auditions, deliberately and consciously, with a dirty, unwashed hair and as much as possible without makeup.

When I was younger, I also had too many roles of beauties, and at about the tenth role I realized that this was all, a dead end and a creative failure. But I knew my potential. By the way, we generally have a simplified approach in cinema; they love types. We actresses are divided into beautiful, dirty, kind, and evil. People don’t put much effort into seeing the beautiful Baba Yaga, and vice versa. And that’s why I also simplified myself at one time, so as not to remain an eternal beauty.

— Did you manage to turn the situation around?

- Managed. I started a series of character or more heroic roles. I walked away from the obvious beauty, which made me sick. But after a while I matured and partially returned to my beautiful self.

— You acted a lot in melodramas. Why do you think this genre is so loved in Russia?

— Because the viewer can rest and relax. This is the same content as comedy. We have continuous jokes and humor, or melodramas on TV. Coming home from work, a person turns on the TV and watches a picture, where he does not have to strain or exert any mental effort. This is such a simple and accessible genre that allows you to get into it without spending a lot of money.

— How immersed are you in the Internet, how many followers do you have on Instagram?

— I am very much attached to the Internet. Whoever lags behind the current generation will not survive. Technologies are developing at a crazy speed. I got my first laptop when I was 21. Until I was 20, I didn’t know what any gadget was. I was from a not very rich family, I was more occupied with books. And this has been my problem for many years, I was one of the last to appear on Instagram. Colleagues at my level have much more subscribers than me. Precisely because they went to Instagram five years earlier. I now have 150 thousand subscribers.

I love Instagram and am active on it. And I get a return from it. I view Instagram not as a resource that allows me to make money, but as an opportunity to communicate with my audience. And any actor, unlike a blogger, always values his audience. We value those who come to our performances and watch our films. Especially if for our sake. My subscribers include the most educated people with whom I conduct conversations on philosophical topics. Sometimes I get bored and lonely, I sit down and write a post. Not for show, but because I like this communication.

I also watch master classes on YouTube, listen to lectures on various topics: acting, editing, language, the history of costume, the history of Russia. I watch documentaries.

— What did you specifically train for this or that role?

— One of my favorite films is “Glory” about the famous hockey player Vyacheslav Fetisov. We filmed it in America. I played Fetisov's wife Lada. I must say that my English is terrible, I have only just started to recover it. In America, I simply hired a teacher who was with me almost always. Because I had to speak English on camera, because, according to the story, I have been living in the USA for a long time. We practiced for a very long time, and I did pretty well.

And recently I took a fire training course.

- Interesting!

— I learned how to assemble and disassemble a Kalashnikov assault rifle, and I meet all the standards. I learned to shoot different types of weapons in different conditions. In addition, I tried throwing knives, even three knives at the same time. This requires a certain strength. Everything worked out. In general, I dream of playing a female superhero, which requires good physical training. The film “Family for a Year” was recently released, and I starred there in my best physical shape. And since I have been experiencing weight fluctuations all my life, then, of course, it was important for me to show that after pregnancy I was not just slim, but also athletic.

— Let's return to the film “Glory”. Before filming, did you communicate with Lada and Vyacheslav Fetisov?

— We had amazing communication. Lada and I were simply kindred spirits. I really do look like her, and not just in appearance. We have similar personalities. Fighting character, fighting spirit. Lada and Slava went through a lot and did not break down. And, probably, I have this, because my life has not always been fabulous. And somehow I got out of all this, precisely due to the strength of spirit, the ability not to give up. I've had this since childhood.

— Probably, as a child you played war with the boys?

- And it was. I am a “tomboy”. It’s just that over time, with motherhood, it went away on a physiological level. A woman who becomes a mother becomes more tender and feminine.

— What was interesting on the set of the series “Ekaterina. Takeoff"?

“I was under a lot of stress when they put a corset on me for the first time, tightening it really, really tight. The corset was original from that time. And it was impossible to breathe in it. It is not clear how women walked in these corsets. I must say that everything we had was original: dresses with crinoline, underwear, stockings, and shoes. Everything is as it was then.

In such heavy dresses you learn to walk and sit again. Because it’s difficult to sit with this perfectly straight back because of the corset. I learned to move smoothly, but they walked differently then. In the modern world, we quickly gesture with our hands, walk quickly, sit, always stooping a little. On the set of “Catherine” I had to remove all this and be such a peahen. For me it was quite a serious experiment.

— You played Catherine’s maid of honor Sofya Chartoryzhskaya. Did you learn anything about her while preparing for filming?

— Yes, a documentary was even made about her. Famous character. Sophia, according to palace rumors, gave birth, testing Paul I for the possibility of having children, an heir to the throne, whose fate is unknown. Most likely, he was sent somewhere, hidden. And then Pyotr Razumovsky, the heir of a wealthy family, married her, and they went abroad together. This was Sophia’s fate.

— Which of the venerable actors did you act with or act on stage with? What did they teach you, how did they impress you?

— Maxim Averin taught me a lot. The project in which we starred for a long time has not yet been released, it lies on the shelf. This was one of my first big jobs. I continuously learned everything from Maxim. Not only the skill of the actor, but also the attitude towards the profession, attitude towards the workshops, towards the analysis of scenes and so on. Maxim had a significant influence on me then. And his love of life is still an example for me.

— Do you often argue with directors on the set?

— It depends on the director. I'm actually a director's actress. I feel comfortable when the director gives me a task. But in our time of producer cinema, it is not always the director on the set who is the director. This could be a student who has just graduated from college and does not understand anything, it could be a person who is simply lazy or drinks. And sometimes you have to take the initiative into your own hands. But for the most part, I see everything at the trial stage. There I understand whether I want to work with this director or not.

— Do you now have the opportunity to choose where to film?

- Everything is very different. We have such a shaky and unstable profession! I had 12 films in 2020. And at such moments I choose, I can refuse some work. But in the last five months I haven’t had anything special. True, I recently abandoned filming - the script was blatantly poorly written. And the role is so disgusting that you don’t even want to get involved.

— In the film “Beautiful Life” you played Julia, who was engaged in prostitution. Also a pretty nasty role?

- That’s not it, I justified her. If you approach it with condemnation, the role will not work. I played this role with great pleasure. It's not about my heroine's profession. The action takes place in the late 80s. And there is a stunning contrast between those who lived according to their conscience and those who knew how to survive at that time. In a good movie there are no bad or good characters. And this ambiguity plays with people's feelings. The coolness of my heroine in “The Beautiful Life” is that she is neither bad nor good. She simply chose this path because she also needed to survive. In general, I strive not to judge anyone - neither in life nor in cinema.

— Which role was the most physically challenging for you?

— Probably, everything is in the same picture “Ekaterina. Takeoff". Because I was filming there while pregnant. And I didn’t tell the group about it for a very long time. I remember there was a ride in a chariot, which was shaking very much, and I was already in my fourth month. And I was on the verge of stopping filming and saying: guys, that’s it, I can’t afford this. It was still 40 degrees hot. I was wearing a bunch of dresses, they just hid my stomach, and therefore, except for the costume designers, no one recognized anything. Because of pregnancy, I constantly wanted to sleep. There were many crowd scenes that took 20 hours to film. And I remember, I will enter the frame at 9 am, and my next appearance will be at 5 pm. And all this time I slept in the actor’s trailer. Probably, in this regard, I had the most difficult filming on “Ekaterina”.
