Halloween pranks, contests and games for children

The Legend of the Jack Lantern

The Legend of the Jack Lantern

They say there was an Irishman named Jack. He was very cunning and never missed his advantage. He also liked to drink. One Halloween night he was drinking ale in a pub and it just so happened that he spent all his money and didn’t take his soul away.

There was no one to borrow from, and the owner did not want to add to the debt. At that time, Satan also looked into the tavern. Seeing Jack’s condition, he suggested to him that I will make you drink as much as you want, but for this you will give me your soul.

Jack agreed, and the devil turned into a gold coin, which could be used to buy all the ale in this pub. But Jack didn’t waste any time and put the coin in his pocket where the silver cross lay.

Satan began to mercilessly burn the crucifix, and he begged for mercy. Jack agreed to let the devil go, but only if he promised to never take his soul to hell, and also provide him with the opportunity to drink throughout his life, whenever and as much as he wants.

Of course, the Devil agreed, but he remembered the insult. When Jack died, having lived a long sinful life, he was not allowed into Heaven, but Satan refused to let him into Hell either. Having given him only a ghostly flashlight. His light should illuminate the path in eternal wanderings on earth. In honor of this lamp, pumpkins with candles were named - Jack-o-lanterns.

Horrible, how spectacular!

Devils, witches, fallen angels and monks are unoriginal, but they are also inexpensive - up to 2-4 thousand rubles.
Another thing is the “Egyptian cat” costume. A black latex jumpsuit with gold inserts for 5 thousand rubles guarantees you enthusiastic sighs from men and envious sighs from women. But only those with an ideal figure can afford this stunning outfit. It’s better to abandon the Gothic idea right away. Characters in this image walk along our streets every single day; such an outfit will no longer surprise anyone, much less frighten anyone. It is much more interesting to create the image of a “black widow”, delightful and terrible: a floor-length black evening dress and a strip of black transparent lace over the eyes or a veil, the fatal look from under which is so intriguing and alluring...

Another trick this season is to dress a la Lady Gaga. A corset, shorts, a skirt that reveals everything possible, a wide leather collar and a huge black hat with feathers - and a sensation among men who adore bright and bold beauties is guaranteed.

Another legend about pumpkins

The pumpkin head with candles is said to have been used by the Druids. They told everyone to place it near their houses to scare away evil spirits, which sometimes passed into our world along with the souls of the departed.

The terrible image of pumpkins frightened the spirits who were planning evil, and the warm fire and bright light burned them, forcing them to avoid their homes. Thus, pumpkins became a kind of guardians, and not just decorations for the holiday.

True, turnips were originally used together with pumpkins, since pumpkins themselves were not yet grown in the British Isles at that time.

"Halloween" - the story of a fun and sinister holiday

The Halloween holiday appeared during the existence of the Celts in the territory of modern Great Britain and part of France. The Celts are known to have divided the year into two main halves - winter and summer. According to legends, all winter the Celtic Sun God was a prisoner of Sowin, a dark deity who ruled the land of the dead and demons. On the first day of November, the Celts celebrated Sowin's Day. They also believed that on the eve of this holiday, at night, a door to the other world opens, from which demons emerge to have fun - to scare people. To appease the inhabitants of Hell, the Celts lit high fires at night and sacrificed part of their harvest. At the beginning of our era, the Romans conquered the Celtic lands, after which they tried to introduce their traditions into this pagan people. At the end of October, the Romans celebrated Feralia - a holiday on which all deceased relatives should be remembered.

In the ninth century, another tradition, the Christian one, intervened in the already changed Celtic tradition. Catholics ordered that the day of the Celtic Soween be celebrated as "All Saints' Day". Literally it sounds like “All Hallows Even”. Gradually, such a long name was shortened to “Hallowe'en”, and then the holiday began to be designated by the word “Halloween” that is familiar to us. Today, only a small set of traditions remains from the ancient Celtic celebration, but this is not bad, since modern “Halloween” is a unique, interesting and unforgettable spectacle.

Basic traditions of Halloween

  1. Black cats on All Saints' Day are, one might say, doomed. If such an animal is at home on Halloween night, then its owners will certainly be in trouble. Therefore, in some countries, black cats are driven outside during the celebration, where they walk all night, adding to the colorfulness of the event.
  2. Pumpkins, in fact, were originally amulets. They were supplemented with nuts, which also have a repellent power. The Celts believed that the Devil was afraid even of the aroma of these products. Therefore, they placed a branch of a walnut tree above the entrance to the house, and placed pumpkins near the threshold. By the way, they started decorating pumpkins with various patterns, often with ominous faces, in the 20th century.
  3. On Halloween, it is customary to light candles in all rooms, which are supposed to scare away evil spirits with their “living fire”. If in some room the candles suddenly go out, it means that evil spirits have made their way there. Would you dare test this superstition on Halloween night 2020?
  4. In all European countries, church bells begin to ring on Halloween night, as this supposedly scares away evil spirits.
  5. The Celts lit ritual bonfires on Halloween, as mentioned earlier. In some countries this tradition is still observed today. When the fire flares up, you need to walk around it, which will help cleanse yourself of negative energy. During such a ritual, the Celts wore masks and various folk costumes.
  6. If an owl lands on the roof of a house on Halloween night, then it must be driven away, since on this night it is the harbinger of death.
  7. In some countries, during the celebration, bats are solemnly killed, as they are believed to be the closest servants of the Devil.
  8. Also, in some corners of the Earth, they tried to get rid of bats on the night of “Halloween”: they were driven out from under the roofs of houses with lit torches, hunted for them, and then killed.
  9. In other countries, bats were welcomed on Halloween. It is believed that if a large flock of these cute living creatures circles over a house for a long time, then its owners will have a wonderful harvest next year.
  10. To ward off evil spirits from one's home, they used to bury the bones of dead animals under its threshold. Stuffed animals were displayed in courtyards. It was from this that the tradition of hanging artificial skeletons near windows and doors arose, although for some reason in the modern world human improvised remains are used.
  11. On Halloween, before sunset, you must walk around your house at least three times with a lit torch (or candle) in your hands. After this, you don’t have to worry about your safety, since the fortress house will not allow evil spirits into it.
  12. Seeing a spider in the house on Halloween is a bad omen. It is the dead who come to warn of danger.
  13. It is recommended to wear all clothing inside out this night. In some countries, people even leave their houses with their backs turned. It is believed that this way you can confuse the evil spirits.

Jack Pumpkinhead

The third legend about the origin of Jack is similar to the first, but in it the cunning Irishman managed to deceive the devil two times. The offended Satan not only did not let the Irishman's soul into hell, but also forced him to wander the earth in the form of a man with a pumpkin instead of a head, in the eye sockets of which hellish flames smolder.

This image sometimes indulges in the spirit of the holiday. He is personified as a creature resembling a scarecrow, with his slender figure and strange attire, and pumpkin head. However, this image appeared much later, the legend of Jack Pumpkinhead.

Rituals, rituals, traditions on Halloween on the night of October 31 to November 1

Traditionally, on Halloween, everyone dresses up in masquerade costumes, visits attractions, plays different games, begs for sweets, prepares a festive dinner and holds parties in a certain setting.

Black fabric

It is considered mourning, which is why they wrap it around the chairs standing at the festive table so that the spirits can see that they are being honored. Satisfied, they will not play pranks, which means that no plate will break in the house, no fire will occur, no flood will happen.

Holy water

- the main protective drink - you need to drink a little of it before the festive dinner and sprinkle all your masquerade clothes, then not a single evil spirit can harm.

Pumpkin

- a symbol of the end of the harvest, and a candle lit and placed inside a vegetable is protection from an evil spirit that fears fire.

There is a legend that once upon a time an Irish farmer named Jack, who loved gambling and beat the Devil himself twice, greatly offended him. Lucifer swore that he would never take the farmer's soul, and since Jack was a great sinner, he could not go to heaven. Therefore, he forever wanders the earth, illuminating his path with a smoldering fire located in a pumpkin, which protects him from wind and rain. Since then, this orange fruit, cleaned of its entrails and placed in it with a candle, has been called “Jack’s head.” They are placed in the windows of a house on Halloween so that the evil spirits will think that there is already someone “of their own” in it and will not try to enter it.

Trick-o-treat

. This phrase is said by children when they ask for sweets, and it is translated as “Trouble or treat” (with a meaning like the expression in Russian “Trick or treat”)! Dressed up teenagers go from house to house in the evening, begging for candy, cookies, and money. It is better not to refuse them, since children who do not receive a treat can do harm - they will stain the door with dirt, write something unpleasant, or flood the threshold with paint.

Halloween ritual to attract prosperity and success

In order for peace, tranquility, prosperity and success to always reign in the house, you need to conduct such a ritual on Halloween. For it you need to prepare water, a landscape sheet, a string, a candle purchased specifically for this purpose, a clay container and a small fan. During the ritual, all elements will meet, since the fan and clay vessel symbolize air and earth, but water and fire are also important. Burn the paper, place the ashes in a clay container filled a quarter with water. Wave your fan over the water. Melt the candle and insert a string into the wax. Wait until it hardens and lower it to the bottom of the container so that it covers the ashes, pour water on top to the edges of the container. Place it on the window. At dawn, take out the wax and hide it in a secret place. In a year it will be possible to get it. Pour out the water.

Halloween ritual of exorcism

To confuse the evil spirits, you need to wear all your clothes inside out on Halloween, leave the house with your back turned, holding a bell in your hands, which you can ring with all your might. Then light a large fire in the yard and walk around it three times counterclockwise, holding hands with the whole family. Leave the fire to burn out and go to the central square, where the fire is also lit. Walk around it counterclockwise three times with everyone present. At dawn, take a coal from the fire in the yard and hide it until next year.

Ghosts and fairies

Ghosts and fairies

Initially, it was believed that during Halloween or Samhain as the Celts called it, any miracle and unusual event could happen. The sorcerers performed magic particularly well, and the spirits were excellent at making contact with people.

Especially those who were responsible for nature, since this holiday was also a harvest festival.

Over time, the holiday became overgrown with legends about encounters with fairies, leprechauns, ghosts and other creatures. Some stories tell how these creatures celebrated cheerfully among people, remaining unrecognized. In others, about people visiting a festival of magical creatures.

Only later is an ominous dark component added to these legends, inspired by the Christian attitude towards mystical peoples.

They say that on Halloween you can easily meet a ghost and have a heart-to-heart talk with it, being sure that it is a living person, until it dissolves right before your eyes.

There are not many funny, humorous tales on my blog. There are magical, philosophical, therapeutic ones, but there are not enough fun ones, in my opinion. Therefore, I was very happy, I was excited about the idea of a new competition, which was organized especially for Halloween by Ira Chirashnya and the “Mom Blogs” community. According to the rules of the competition, you need to write a scary, funny fairy tale about Halloween, the heroes of which should be our children.

I had great pleasure writing this fairy tale. I hope you get it too when you read it. Sonechka liked it too, especially a few moments that we now remember and laugh about. She also drew several illustrations for the fairy tale, the best of which I inserted into the text. Have a spooky-fun Halloween everyone!

How Sofia helped the witch on Halloween

The fifth generation witch, Matilda Drakulovna Chernova, woke up that day in a bad mood. And for a witch there is nothing worse than waking up on such a day in a bad mood. After all, it was the most important day of the year, Halloween.

Matilda Drakulovna’s Halloween program was prepared six months ago. There are scares, a Sabbath on Bald Mountain, and much more. She was looking forward to this day so much. And then, bam... And all because of this damned...

- Mot, Mot, are you going to get up already or not? – she heard the voice of her cat, black as night, Vasily. He sat on the windowsill and washed his face. – Don’t forget, in the morning we wanted to fly around the houses and place pumpkins on the windowsills. Was it in vain that we cut them out for two weeks?

Matilda Drakulovna did not answer, but only groaned and threw the first object that came to her hand at Vaska. It turned out to be a broom.

- Well, you give it, mother! – the cat snorted, dodging the broom. He was not even offended by his mistress, but was simply very surprised by her behavior. - Man, at least tell her!

“What am I going to tell her?” Manya squeaked, awakened by the noise in the room.

She was hanging upside down, her paws hooked on the top shelf of the bookcase.

“Well, tell her it’s Halloween and it’s time to get up.” Maybe she'll listen to you. You and she are almost relatives.

“The fact that we both can fly doesn’t make us related.” What do we, bats, care about witches? But the fact that she won’t have time to pick up her dress suit from the dry cleaner, wow…. – Manya answered, wrapping herself in her soft wings like a blanket.

- Mot, Mot, what’s wrong with you? – Vasily dared to approach the bed and rub his back against the mistress’s hand.

- Leave me alone, you disgusting one! I'll turn you into a toad! If only you could... “Uuuuuuu,” Matilda Drakulovna howled without finishing.

The cat walked in circles around his owner for half a day, but could not get a word out of her, she only moaned and covered herself with a pillow. It was approaching time for afternoon tea, and the house didn’t even smell like breakfast yet.

“We need to go for help,” said Vasily.

“It’s high time,” Manya agreed.

Vasily jumped out the window and went to the house of his friend, the girl Sofia. Having cunningly entered the entrance, he climbed to the fourth floor and sat down near the door, starting to meow loudly.

“Sonya, they came to see you,” said the girl’s mother, opening the door.

- Who's there? – asked the small skeleton, appearing in the doorway.

Mom in a carrot costume and Sofia

Vasily jumped to the side, and then realized that it was just a suit.

“Mom and I are preparing for the holiday,” Sofia explained. – She will have a carrot costume, and I’ll be a skeleton.

- Carrots? – the cat grinned.

“Bloodthirsty carrots,” my mother explained. - Vasya, will you have some milk?

- Yes, I would really like... And sausages.

“And I’ll have sausages, too, without the bread,” Sonechka shouted, and then added in a whisper: “She hides the sausage from me, says it’s not children’s food, but eats it herself in front of the computer at night.”

Mom brought milk, sausage, and still bread. While Sofia and Vasily were having a snack, the cat talked about what was going on in the witch’s house in the morning.

“Okay, let’s go to her and we’ll figure it out, otherwise Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without a witch,” Sofia said, taking off her skeleton costume and putting on her jeans.

When Vasily and Sofia entered the room, Matilda Drakulovna was still lying in bed, covered with a blanket over her head.

- Aunt Matilda, what’s wrong with you? – the girl asked, lifting the edge of the blanket.

The witch just moaned quietly. But what she saw was enough for Sofia to understand what was going on. Just recently, her dad was also lying in bed and moaning, and his cheek was just as swollen.

- Tooth? – the girl asked, and the witch nodded her head.

“Wait here,” Sofia said, disappearing through the door.

She appeared about twenty minutes later and brought with her a bald guy with a suitcase.

- Well, where is our patient? - he said and smiled, revealing two rows of white, healthy teeth. Among them, two large artificial vampire fangs stood out. Apparently, he also started dressing up in a suit when Sofia came to pick him up.

- Fuck you! Vampire on my head! – Matilda Drakulovna screamed. - Come on, heal me. Because the pain makes me want to do nasty magic.

- Don't complain, patient. “You better sit down here, under the lamp,” said the uncle-dentist. - So-so …. Where is our bad tooth? Yep, here he is! Just a minute... A small prick... It won't hurt. Here we are now, you prankster, so as not to bother you...

Witch with broom and bat

- Oh! – the witch just had time to say when the aching tooth ended up in the doctor’s hands.

- Well, how do we feel now? - asked my uncle.

“Like a normal person, or rather a witch, thank you,” Matilda Drakulovna smiled, sparkling with a new hole in the top row on the right.

“We’ll have to insert an artificial tooth later,” said the dentist.

- No, I’ll grow a new one. “I’m a witch,” Matilda Drakulovna assured him.

The dentist uncle refused tea with frog's leg jam, citing the fact that his wife and children were waiting for him at home, dressed in ghost costumes and ready to go shopping for candy. And Matilda Drakulovna grabbed a broom and, flying away, shouted to her family:

- I'm going to the dry cleaner!

“I hope he makes it in time,” Manya the bat squeaked from her shelf. “She still has about fifteen minutes to pick up her favorite black silk dress and hat with a veil.”

Witches and the coven

Many legends claim that on Halloween, witches always flock to the Sabbath. Indeed, the Druids, and later other representatives of mystical cults, gathered and celebrated this holiday together. They performed their mysterious rituals and just had fun.

With the arrival of Christians, this had to be done secretly. Many of the traditions of the covens themselves have changed and become darker and more frightening. But this does not mean at all that sorcerers and witches organize human sacrifices and mass orgies, but the church, and later cinema, loved to describe such events.

Most ancient legends do not contain any mention of something like this. But they describe appeals to the old gods, dances, rituals with the sacrifice of grain and tree fruits. As well as communication with spirits, feasts, etc.

Living Dead

Another, incidentally, fairly recent legend is that on Halloween you can meet real zombies who have risen from their graves. It has little in common with the spirit of the main holiday. Still, it's good at scaring and entertaining.

Naturally, the dead do not rise from their graves on their own. But if you raise them, it’s a different matter. Here and there you hear stories that someone killed one, or even a crowd of zombies. But judge for yourself who needs to raise a dead army in our age, and only for one night.

However, it is still better not to go to the cemetery that night, as other otherworldly creatures may meet there.

Tips for terribly beautiful makeup

DIY Halloween makeup for girls must be stylish and neat. You are probably fascinated by photos of beauties from the Internet who easily create spectacular makeup with clear lines. You can do it too! Terribly beautiful makeup has several secrets. We will be happy to open them for you.

Best Halloween Looks

  • No holiday is worth harming your own skin. Some girls take great risks using PVA glue and regular watercolors to create makeup. If simple cosmetics are not enough for you to create the desired look, buy either children's makeup (it's cheaper) or professional makeup.
  • When painting, you will most likely need a variety of brushes. Buy them at a stationery or art store - regular paint brushes will work just fine.
  • You can find blood in every second Halloween makeup. It is easy to draw using available materials. For example, you can combine glycerin and red pigment, use red eye shadow or lipstick.
  • If your makeup involves changing the shape of your eyebrows, you can cover them with soap first.
  • Often a white pencil is needed to create a believable image. For example, it will help lengthen or enlarge your eyes.
  • Don't be afraid to mix different cream textures with your foundation. This way you can get bright colors for painting.
  • If you doubt your artistic abilities, you can practice making the makeup you like in advance. This way you’ll get the hang of it and quickly implement your idea on a holiday.
  • Baby oil is perfect for washing off the greasy texture of makeup, while face painting can be done with regular micellar water.
