Abortion at 16 weeks: doctor's prescription, rules and timing, indications, contraindications and consequences for the woman's body

Abortion is the only surgical intervention whose main goal is not considered to be getting rid of the disease. On the contrary, abortion is carried out in order to prevent a natural phenomenon. And no matter how long it is allowed to terminate a pregnancy, no matter what method is used for this, abortion extremely rarely does not have consequences for the woman’s health. The number of abortions in Russia increases every year. Women are often interested in why medical abortion is dangerous and is it dangerous at all? Let's try to figure it out.

Consequences

Women who have not yet given birth are interested in the dangers of abortion during their first pregnancy. And it’s not for nothing that they ask this question, because it is considered the most dangerous. The function of childbearing programmed by nature changes significantly. The body does not know how the cervix opens before the scheduled period, for what reason the fetus is removed using an incomprehensible method. In this regard, no matter how traumatic the intervention may be, the consequences of abortion will occur. After all, the operation encroaches on the most important function of any woman’s body – reproduction.

The very first danger of abortion in the early stages is the inability to have children in the future. Most infertile women were unable to give birth to children in the future precisely as a result of abortion. This could happen because complications arose during or after the procedure. An abortion, among other things, could result in injury to the internal genital organs. The possibility of infertility is more acceptable in women who become pregnant for the first time. According to statistics, half of the total number of episodes of tubal infertility is caused by termination of pregnancy.

Types of abortions

Before the procedure, a woman needs to undergo a series of examinations that will help determine the woman’s health status, the exact duration of pregnancy, and the presence or absence of concomitant diseases.

How to take the medicine:

Drugs for medical abortion are not freely available in pharmacy chains. You should take the tablets strictly as prescribed by your doctor. After taking the pill, 1 to 2 days later, the woman experiences bleeding, which indicates that the fertilized egg has detached from the uterine cavity. After the fertilized egg is released, the woman should undergo a second ultrasound examination, which will allow the doctor to make sure that the embryo has been completely removed from the uterus.

Possible complications:

Quite often, after bleeding, a woman may experience a rise in body temperature, chills, deterioration in the general condition of the body, dizziness, and nausea. In such cases, the woman should immediately consult a doctor or call an emergency ambulance. Complications from medical abortion often lead to the need for surgery.

Despite the possibility of complications, medical abortion is the least traumatic. Complications can be prevented if the termination procedure is carried out in the early stages of pregnancy, when significant changes have not occurred in the woman’s body.

Late pregnancy termination

In addition to the above methods of abortion, there are also those that are performed extremely rarely and only in late stages of pregnancy. Such abortions include intraamnial fluid administration. This procedure is carried out for a period of 18 to 27 weeks.

During the procedure, the doctor expands the uterine canal into which a long and thick needle is inserted to pierce the amniotic sac. Using a needle, amniotic fluid is sucked out, after which a concentrated solution of table salt and glucose is injected into the uterine cavity. This procedure causes the death of the child, which makes it possible to induce labor artificially or by caesarean section within a few hours.

After removing the fetus from the uterus, the anterior abdominal wall and the wall of the uterus are opened, from which not only the fetus is removed, but also all surrounding tissue.

This method of abortion is carried out in extreme cases and only for clear medical indications.

Complications:

After an abortion, a number of complications may develop in the form of bleeding, bacterial infection, or infertility.

Based on the above, it should be noted that regardless of the method or type of abortion, a woman is subject to a number of complications not only at the psychological level, but also physiologically. After all, based on statistics, more than 7% of women after an abortion are not able to conceive, carry and give birth to a healthy child.

Before undergoing the procedure, every woman should think very carefully whether she has the right to harm her health and take the life of her loved one, who in the future may be the only person who will truly love her mother, regardless of her status, and only for that that she gave him life.

Scraping

The most popular method of abortion is fetal curettage; even during the procedure, it can cause significant health problems. Is abortion dangerous after cesarean section, as well as during the first pregnancy? Such an abortion is performed almost blindly and by touch. Even a doctor with extensive experience often has to perform an operation almost at random, since the location of the internal organs and the fetus are not visible to him. The specialist will point instruments into the internal cavity in order to find, dismember and remove the fetus. During this process, many organs can be damaged. An unnatural opening of the uterus can result in injury to the uterus.

The harm of abortion. Maybe it's better to give birth?

The harm of abortion - what is it? Why are “underground” abortions incredibly dangerous? What harm is possible from an abortion due to an infection? What causes infertility and ectopic pregnancy? How do embryonic remains lead to cancer? What happens if the uterus is pierced? What is the danger of hormonal imbalance after an abortion? Why can medical abortion cause double harm?

First place in infanticide

Our country, unfortunately, ranks first in the world in the number of artificial abortion operations performed, commonly referred to as abortion. This far from honorable place has been preserved for many years, and no work on family planning, no attempts to educate the people in terms of contraception have yet been able to change the situation. The harm of an abortion caused by medical intervention, the severe moral harm women inflict on themselves due to a subconscious feeling of guilt, as well as the further consequences of the abortion, if, of course, the patient remains alive, for some reason scare women much less than the birth of a child. But, unfortunately, many women do not know that no advances in the field of medicine, modern medicines and equipment can significantly reduce the risk that a woman’s health is exposed to during an abortion and the harm that will be caused to her as a result of the operation . So what exactly are the harms of abortion?

Powerful infectious complication

You can never be immune from infectious complications. If we remember the long and distant past, then until the 40s, before the discovery of antibiotics, women died during abortions precisely from infection - regardless of whether the operation was carried out in a medical institution or “underground”. The harm of abortion in such cases is enormous. At different periods in the history of our state, abortions were either prohibited or permitted. Depending on this, most of them were carried out either in gynecological hospitals - officially, or somewhere in a place that was not entirely suitable for this procedure. It’s just that in those days there were no good tools and antiseptics for treating the surgeon’s hands. Nowadays we have all this. Even disposable curettes have appeared - the main tool for curettage of the uterine cavity. But a woman’s immunity can be so reduced that all medications will be useless. And if the infection develops, the harm of abortion will become inevitable. Infection can lead to both local inflammation of the mucous membrane - endometritis, and general blood infection - sepsis, which is difficult to treat in a hospital setting. Those who decide to have an “underground” abortion have virtually no chance of survival.

Infertility and ectopic pregnancy

Another way in which the harm of abortion can manifest itself is through subsequent infertility. Abortion is always accompanied by local inflammation, even if it occurs without fever or other signs of infection. Inflammation affects not only the uterus, but also the tubes; the ciliated epithelium in them may disappear - a special structure that allows the fertilized egg from the abdominal cavity to move through the tube towards the uterus. In this case, the patency of the tubes is disrupted until they become completely clogged, which causes infertility.

In case of incomplete fusion, another harm of abortion is possible, a very serious complication - ectopic pregnancy, when the egg is attached to the tube itself and further movement is impossible. As the embryo grows, the tube swells and ruptures, which is accompanied by bleeding. This condition requires emergency surgery to remove the tube - which in itself makes it very difficult to get pregnant again. In addition, often the inability to stop the bleeding leads to amputation of the uterus - there is no point in talking about pregnancy.

Severe hormonal imbalance

It takes several weeks for a woman’s body to adjust to pregnancy. Therefore, during an abortion, he is exposed to severe hormonal and general stress - because now he must “rebuild himself back.” The harm of abortion here can manifest itself in severe hormonal disruptions. This can happen not only in the genital area, but also in the associated general system of internal secretion organs - in the adrenal glands, the thyroid gland. The ovaries themselves suffer the most - they are at risk of at least dysfunction, which without persistent, long-term treatment can also lead to the impossibility of conception.

Fetal remains lead to cancer

Even experienced doctors working “blindly” in the uterus can leave a piece of embryonic tissue there. In large or paid clinics, abortions are now performed under ultrasound control, but this does not always guarantee success. “Forgotten” tissue in the uterus can lead to many troubles, and the harm of abortion in this case can be incredibly powerful. It can all start with bleeding, often prolonged, because the uterus contracts well only when it is “empty.” Then everything can lead to inflammation of the membranes - the so-called endometritis - a condition that requires repeated curettage and treatment with strong antibiotics. Well, in the worst case, everything can end in the development of chorionepithelioma - a malignant tumor that grows precisely from embryonic tissue. In this case, the harm of abortion can be fatal. This tumor is rare, but incredibly aggressive! It literally “eats” the surrounding tissues, growing through everything through and in all directions - it is poorly diagnosed and even worse treated.

The uterus can be pierced

You should never forget about such a purely technical complication of abortion as perforation (perforation) of the uterus. In other words, during the operation the uterus may simply be punctured. This complication is rare, but must be taken into account, because it can occur even in an experienced doctor. The harm caused by abortion is as follows. The mucous membrane of the pregnant uterus is loose, it is very easy to damage it, if you also take into account the above-mentioned “working blindly”. If in “underground” conditions this always leads to severe bleeding, peritonitis and, as a rule, the death of the patient, then in the clinic it always leads to amputation of the uterus with the inability to become pregnant in the future even with the help of so-called IVF, i.e. in vitro (artificial) fertilization.

The double danger of medication

Used in recent years, the supposedly “completely harmless” medical abortion – with the help of a few very strong pills – is devoid of the dangers associated with the surgical technique, bleeding or infection, but produces such a powerful hormonal “storm” in the woman’s body that such a malfunction can subsequently occur throughout the endocrine system. The harm of this type of abortion can cause incredibly serious health problems for the woman. In addition, medical abortion often does not lead to the desired results, namely complete removal of the ovum, and may require a conventional instrumental abortion, which significantly adds up the harm from both types of abortion.

Psychological aspect

Here are all the main possible complications of abortion, which constitute the essence of its medical harm to a woman. In addition, the psychological harm of abortion must be taken into account. Even those who do not believe in God still consider, albeit subconsciously, this procedure to be a sin and experience pangs of conscience and guilt. Different women in different ways - some more, some less - but especially strongly if, after a thoughtlessly performed “small” operation, the woman, if she still remains alive, finds out that in the future she will no longer have children. never can.

Consequences of scraping

Possible consequences after an abortion:

  • Injuries to the vessels located in the uterus lead to large blood losses.
  • Inflammation of the genital organs appears as a result of infection during surgery. If the uterine tubes become inflamed, then there is a possibility of an ectopic pregnancy subsequently, which is also fraught with abortion.
  • The impossibility of a new pregnancy appears after an abortion due to the fact that obstruction of the uterine tubes may develop.
  • Difficulties in subsequent pregnancy. Injuries to the cervix are fraught with deterioration of its condition, and this threatens miscarriages and premature birth.
  • Menstrual irregularities. They arise due to injury to the uterine mucosa. The result is severe bleeding and pain during menstruation.

  • Mental disorders. Women who decide to terminate a pregnancy often feel guilty, afraid, and depressed. They are characterized by mood swings, unreasonable hysterics, and nervousness. This may be considered the result of impaired functioning of internal organs, abnormal heartbeat, etc.

“A woman must make her own decision.” Abortions and who does them

Over the past 20 years, Russians have begun to have a worse attitude towards abortion, the Levada Center reported, and regional ministries of health and maternity hospital administrations in a number of Russian regions recently announced a temporary moratorium on abortion operations. A number of Russian politicians are in favor of excluding pregnancy termination from the list of services covered by compulsory health insurance.

We talked with an obstetrician-gynecologist of the highest category with more than 18 years of experience about the ethics of abortion and refusal to terminate a pregnancy by a doctor, as well as about the most common reasons and conditions in which women make a difficult decision. Due to the sensitivity of the topic, the interlocutor asked not to use her name.

“FIVE PERCENT STAY PREGNANT”

— You work in private clinics. Tell me, how often do women go to a gynecologist to have a medical abortion?

— I haven’t really worked in municipal institutions since 2006, it’s difficult for me to judge what kind of flow there is, but in private clinics where I practice now, there is a flow, but it’s small. There are definitely two abortions a month, sometimes three, four... Probably from one to five. There are months, so to speak, that are fertile for abortions. And there are times when they don’t ask for this service at all. In addition, we have a lot of doctors, perhaps women go to other clinics and other specialists. Due to the financial situation in the country, people save money and go to regular clinics for compulsory medical insurance.

— How much does it cost to terminate a pregnancy in Samara?

— 10 thousand rubles is the minimum amount, as far as I know, for private clinics. This is the official price, not a hidden price. If the doctor doesn’t take the pills out from under the counter, goes through the cash register as expected, and fills out all the documentation, then 10 thousand is the minimum. This is the pricing policy in institutions on the outskirts. The maximum reaches 20 thousand, twice as much, this is in the most popular Samara clinics.

One way ticket: stories of women who survived abortions

— How do you conduct pre-abortion counseling? What do you talk about with women, are you interested in the reasons why they decided to have an abortion?

- Of course, I am always interested in the reasons. A woman’s medical history and what diseases she has play a very important role. I always evaluate the full range of medical history, starting with reproductive function. When a girl has problems with her cycle, along with some gynecological diseases, I evaluate this and bring to the attention of the patient that there may be problems with subsequent childbearing and conception if the pregnancy is terminated now. I assess the duration of the pregnancy, whether the woman has given birth, what the patient’s age is, whether she has blood diseases and many other factors. Only later, at the last moment, do I find out the reason for the termination of the pregnancy. For some, this reason is not so significant, and sometimes, maybe 5% of patients, after talking with me, leave and continue the pregnancy.

“ALL DUE TO LACK OF CONTRACEPTION”

— Don’t you set a goal for yourself to persuade a woman to keep the child?

- No, I just talk about all the pros and cons, and always focus on the fact that the patient can go away and think and for some reason return to another doctor. We are all human, and someone may not like me. It is important that she terminates the pregnancy in a normal clinic, under normal conditions, does not do anything stupid, does not search on the Internet for dangerous methods of home abortion. I try to protect women from such situations, so that if they decide to terminate their pregnancy, they go to a specialist.

The woman must make the decision herself. Sometimes patients try to shift responsibility onto the doctor: “Well, how can you tell me?” This happens. I say: “You give birth for yourself, not for a man, whatever decision you make will be the right one.” I cannot enter into the soul, into the situation. Women must decide this for themselves. I describe all the risks, I give the opportunity, as a specialist, to help ensure that the pregnancy is terminated with minimal losses to health. And I have never had a situation where after the abortion I had there were any complications so that the woman would not get pregnant later.

Who's at risk?

Disastrous abortion results are not uncommon. But there is a special risk group that is more at risk after surgery than others:

  • Women who have had two or more abortions.
  • Women with inflammation of the reproductive system.
  • Women who had an abortion during their first pregnancy.
  • Women who have had surgery on the ovaries or uterus.

The most frightening result of an abortion is a decrease in the ability to bear a normal child without diseases in the future. Abortion increases the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy, defects of the placenta and the unborn child. After the first termination of pregnancy, the possibility of losing the child is a quarter of all situations; a second abortion increases this number to one third. All of the following operations not only increase the chance of miscarriage to 50%, but also pose a threat of developing tumors of the breast, uterus and cervix.

Why is abortion especially dangerous for a woman who has not given birth?

The statistics are quite deplorable: 80 out of 100 women diagnosed with infertility had an abortion when carrying a child for the first time.

  1. “Primary miscarriage” means that the body has retained in “memory” everything that happened during the first pregnancy and subsequently tries to repeat everything.
  2. Inability to bear a child. The uterine cervix, which is first opened through surgery, loses its good condition and flexibility, which affects the woman’s ability to give birth to a healthy child.
  3. Problems with menstruation. The first termination of pregnancy can interrupt the normal functioning of the endocrine system. Hormonal levels will deviate from normal levels. Critical days become irregular. Hormonal changes also affect a woman’s psyche and can lead to problems with excess weight and sexual deviations.
  4. Possible damage to the walls of the uterus, infection (both during the first abortion and subsequent ones).

To make the first termination of pregnancy less traumatic and reduce all possible negative results from the procedure, you need to resort to medical or vacuum abortion. Since surgical termination of the first pregnancy is almost always very dangerous.

Why is abortion so dangerous during the first pregnancy?

  1. During fertilization, hormonal changes begin in the body. In case of termination of pregnancy, they stop abruptly, which can then negatively affect the hormonal background as a whole. For example, hormonal diseases that are difficult to treat will arise.
  2. During the first pregnancy, the lining of the uterus is very thin. During an abortion, it is very easy to damage it, which will not allow you to become pregnant in the future.

In addition, during an abortion, an infection can enter the uterus. But there is such a risk both during the first pregnancy and subsequent ones.

Even if a woman becomes pregnant again and is about to give birth, complications may arise during pregnancy.

The best way to avoid unwanted pregnancy is to use contraception. Of course, this is not a 100% guarantee, but even if pregnancy is detected, you should think 10 times whether it is worth having an abortion? Perhaps you still need to give birth. Many women later regret having an abortion, especially those who remain infertile afterwards.

Is abortion with the pill dangerous?

If the timing and time permits, then it is better to terminate the pregnancy with the help of medications. As stated earlier, this will reduce the danger of negative impacts and negative outcomes of abortion. A second surgical abortion is even more dangerous than the first. Regardless of the total number of pregnancy terminations, the greater their number, the more the woman’s own health is undermined. In this regard, if it was not possible to carry out the procedure before the seventh week of pregnancy, it is not recommended to do it at all.

The terrible consequences of abortion, which everyone is silent about...

Subscribe

Just a couple of decades ago, a woman had no choice - if she became pregnant, she had to give birth, and if it didn’t work out, she had to accept it for life... Now there is such a thing as pregnancy planning: IVF, surrogacy, the possibility of interrupting an unwanted conception. And if the child appeared at the wrong time (no man, no finances, no other priorities in life), then women often decide to have an abortion. We will not talk about the dangers of abortion for women's health. The topic of today's conversation is how abortion affects the female psyche. Psychologist Nadezhda Markova tells.

I came across Nadezhda’s book “The Stork’s Mistakes” about a year ago, and I really wanted to share this information with you. And so Nadezhda agreed to give an interview:

Hope, many people know the impact abortion has on health. But what impact does it have on a woman’s psyche and on partnerships?

First of all, abortion is a stress of immeasurable force for the health and psyche of a woman. “They picked the sweet berry together, I picked the bitter berry alone...” - this song perfectly describes the state of a woman going for an abortion. In the hospital, only a woman is crucified on a gynecological chair. This is her calvary, the moment of her total loneliness, physical and mental torment. Even if there are dozens of justifications for an abortion and this step is forced for a number of reasons!

In the last decade, it has become fashionable for husbands to be present at births. Today this boom has subsided. As practice has shown, for the psyche of many representatives of the stronger sex, the process of childbirth, instead of a joyful event, became a shock. Sometimes they themselves fainted and required medical attention. If “accidental” dads, by the will of fate, ended up with a woman in the operating room at the time of an abortion (the murder of their child), I think there would be significantly fewer abortions.

As a rule, after an abortion, a woman stops trusting her partner. It is very difficult for her to again see in him a support man, a protector, the head of the family, a person she can rely on. Every time she looks at her lover, consciously or not, resentment arises in her soul, the bitterness of loss and the question: “Can you protect me?”

Problems arise in intimacy. The woman is filled with fear of the horror and suffering she has experienced. She cannot relax, open up to a man, or enjoy sex. Receiving orgasm and sexual pleasure, both with this partner and with others, can be blocked and accompanied by fears and panic attacks.

Often a man, filled with feelings of guilt, is afraid and avoids intimacy and its negative consequences. Often he feels himself to be the culprit for the loss of a woman’s physical health, her attractiveness and peace of mind. Sexual relationships are fundamentally disrupted.

If the initiator of the abortion was a woman, for a man it is a cruel blow below the belt - to his manhood, self-confidence, and joint future. After all, the woman killed him in the person of an aborted baby.

As a result, abortions can lead to the disappearance of sexual desire, and the couple’s sexual relationship comes to naught. Life under the same roof for partners who have aborted a child loses its meaning.

Whether the failed parents stay together or separate, the aborted child is now always present in the energy field of two family systems - father and mother, and his energy can influence them.

Bert Hellinger and his followers, in their practical work, revealed not only the impact of abortion on relationships between partners, but also the fatal impact of an aborted child on other children in the family and on the entire family system as a whole.

Children born after one or more abortions are especially at risk. Children in such a family, as well as other family members in the future, may experience the following tendencies : a desire for death, fear of life, exposure to frequent traumatic situations and illnesses, distrust of the mother, people, life, suicidal tendencies, childlessness. These people do not allow themselves to be happy in their personal lives, they do not give themselves the right to joy, luck and success.

I would like to draw special attention to dear readers - the above-mentioned consequences may manifest themselves if an aborted child is excluded from the family system. What does expelled from the family mean? When they approach abortion lightly, they treat the baby as an object and not a living soul, they ignore the very fact of abortion, they hide the presence of unborn children from other family members, and they “forget” about aborted children.

To avoid the negative consequences of an abortion, the aborted child must be returned to the family , grieve for his loss, be lovingly accepted into the heart, especially the mother, and pay tribute to the memory and respect of his murdered soul.

If the abortion has already been done, and the woman experiences feelings of guilt. What is important to realize and accept?

Guilt often accompanies a woman after an abortion; it torments a woman’s heart, giving her no peace. After all, deep down, each of us knows what kills the human soul. But guilt always requires punishment. And the woman punishes herself with illness, depression, loneliness, and denial of her right to happiness. I advise such women not to blame themselves, because nothing can be corrected by this. And take responsibility for what has already happened. We are all human, just human, and we are imperfect.

At the time of abortion, due to our unconsciousness and the will of fate, we act, as it seems to us, in the best way. Otherwise we don’t know how, we don’t see, we don’t realize. We are like children who don’t know what they are doing. And like foolish children, we need to understand and accept ourselves as we were. “Yes, I did it, it’s my responsibility and my pain. I regret. Then I couldn’t do it any other way. Now I would act completely differently.”

Even if a lot of time has passed, a woman can always talk to her child by telling him one of the following phrases:

– You are my first child, and I had an abortion. This is my responsibility and my pain.

“I didn’t want to look at you.” Now I see you. There is a good place in my heart for you as my child.

– There is something of a killer in me (after 2 abortions).

“I wasn’t ready to give you life then.” Your sister was little. I killed you. I am so sorry.

“I wanted to give you life, but you left.” I respect your choice (in case of miscarriage).

Despite the severity of some words, these phrases lighten and free the soul. After this, release the child in peace.

It will be good for believers to go to confession and repent, to pray for the soul of an innocent child by attending a service where they read the Akathist about murdered babies. You can do something good in memory of an aborted child. For example, help other children, write a fairy tale, plant a tree or rose, etc. And pour out all your unspent love on your living children and on your beloved man.

Adolescence

Today, statistics say that more than seventy percent of teenagers who become pregnant solve the problem through abortion. And this is very regrettable, because surgical intervention at such a young age can be fraught with many problems, even death for the girl. How dangerous is abortion (vacuum, medication, etc.) at this age?

With such early terminations of pregnancy, girls, without realizing it, can ruin their lives. It is logical that few girls want to complicate their fate at 16 years old, but an abortion at this age can be fraught with dangerous side effects, such as endometritis, inflammation, etc.

Abortions during adolescence are especially dangerous. Many people mistakenly believe that by solving the problem of unwanted pregnancy through medication, the girl will in no way harm herself. This is not so, because during medical termination of pregnancy, powerful hormonal drugs are used in large quantities, which can so shake the hormonal system that the girl will need to put it in order for quite a long time. No specialist can guarantee that everything will return to normal and the girl will have the opportunity to conceive and give birth to a child in the future.

Abortion... How does it affect a woman's health?

This is the twenty-first century - the peak of the flourishing of civilization, but despite sharp leaps in the development of society, scientific technology and medicine, the number of abortions in the world paradoxically remains catastrophically high.

Photo: Depositphotos

What is especially sad is the fact that Russia occupies one of the leading positions in terms of their number. Dozens of television programs and hundreds of articles with screaming headlines are devoted to this terrible problem. Nevertheless, society seems to be half asleep: it does not perceive these alarming warning signals.

So, do we really understand what abortion is and how it affects women’s health?

Abortion - artificial termination of pregnancy, accompanied by the death of the embryo, is fraught with many pitfalls. Many of the consequences do not appear immediately, but after a certain period of time, sometimes so long that the woman does not associate their appearance directly with the abortion. Moreover, termination of pregnancy at any stage has an impact on a woman’s health, and not only at a late stage, as many people think.

Photo: Depositphotos

Depending on the duration of the pregnancy, methods for terminating it vary in modern medicine:

  • in the early stages (2−8 weeks), drug provocation of spontaneous abortion or vacuum aspiration (mini-abortion) is used;
  • at later stages (6-22 weeks) - “classic abortion”, direct surgical intervention in the uterine cavity;
  • at a period of 22 weeks or more - causing premature birth.

When pregnancy occurs, a woman’s body begins to experience powerful hormonal changes. Its artificial interruption causes a severe blow to health, causing a malfunction of the endocrine and nervous systems. Moreover, for young women who have not given birth, termination of pregnancy poses a greater threat than for those who already have children. Abortion sometimes serves as an impetus for menstrual irregularities, damage to the patency of the fallopian tubes, and can provoke the development of breast cancer and endometriosis.

In the early stages up to 8 weeks, drug provocation of spontaneous abortion is used. Photo: Depositphotos

At short stages of pregnancy, the abortion procedure is carried out blindly, so there is always a certain risk of violating the integrity of the internal walls of the uterus, injuring them with an instrument and, as a result, bleeding. The possibility of infection cannot be excluded, which leads to the formation of various inflammatory processes of the small pelvis (inflammation of the peripelvic peritoneum, uterine appendages, periuterine tissue), and in the case of blood poisoning (sepsis), death is possible.

But still, one of the most common dangerous consequences of abortion is infertility - the inability to occur or the complicated course of the next pregnancy: spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), recurrent miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, premature birth, placenta accreta, etc.

After an abortion, a woman may develop depressionPhoto: Depositphotos

In addition to physical harm, artificial termination of pregnancy also affects the mental state (post-abortion syndrome). A woman may develop depression and, as a result of the desire to get away from a stressful situation, an addiction to psychotropic and narcotic drugs. Constantly depressed mood, pangs of conscience and feelings of guilt often lead to sleep disorders, obsessive fears, and nightmares. In some particularly severe cases, the help of a psychiatrist is required.

It is clear that no matter how extensive the fight against abortion is, this problem will not completely disappear; a ban on it will only aggravate the situation, drive it “underground” and provoke its criminal development. But, nevertheless, I would like more consciousness and responsibility among women. First of all, to ourselves.

Is abortion really safe?

Possible complications after drug interruption are less likely than after surgery. In this case, what is the danger of pills? If there is heavy bleeding or significant hormonal problems, then in the absence of proper medical intervention, they can cause the inability to become pregnant and can even cause the death of a woman. Although medical termination of pregnancy is usually considered a traditional method, it can lead to significant hormonal disruptions. The main women's difficulties after this can be called:

  • Spasms and severe uncontrollable blood loss.
  • Inflammation in the reproductive system.
  • Menstrual problems.
  • Hyperthermia.
  • Ovarian dysfunction.
  • Pain in the abdominal cavity.

Consequences of a mini abortion

In a vacuum abortion (mini abortion), the fertilized egg is removed using a special vacuum suction. Vacuum abortion is performed in the early stages of pregnancy (up to three weeks). This method of termination of pregnancy is less traumatic for a woman, as it reduces the risk of damage to the uterus, bleeding and infection. Vacuum abortion cannot be performed in case of inflammatory processes in the reproductive system, acute and purulent infections, or during pregnancy of more than three weeks.

Vacuum abortion is performed under local anesthesia. A special catheter is inserted into the uterine cavity. The catheter creates negative pressure in the uterus. Under the influence of negative pressure, the fertilized egg can be brought out.

The consequences of a vacuum abortion may be invisible and go away on their own. Some consequences of a mini-abortion may become apparent several years after the procedure. It is very important to promptly identify and treat the consequences of abortion.

Partial removal of the ovum is the most common consequence of vacuum abortion. In this case, after an abortion, prolonged heavy bleeding and cramping pain appear in the lower abdomen. When the fertilized egg is partially removed, an infection may join its decaying tissues. In this case, inflammatory processes immediately flare up. If the manifestations of the consequences of a vacuum abortion are erased, a woman may not seek medical help in time.

The consequences of any type of abortion (including vacuum abortion) can be severe hormonal disorders - disruption of the menstrual cycle, irregular menstrual bleeding. Over time, these consequences of vacuum abortion can lead to the development of hormonal diseases and infertility.

The inflammatory process in the female genital organs is another dangerous consequence of abortion. Inflammation can begin in the wall of the uterus and gradually spread to other genital organs of the woman. In the tissue surrounding the cervix, ulcers enclosed in a capsule very often form. If the capsule ruptures, then pus fills the pelvic cavity and breaks through to the surface of the body. Through the channels (fistulas), pus can move in different directions.

A particularly dangerous consequence of abortion is the transfer of inflammation to the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The inflammatory process in the fallopian tubes can lead to the development of persistent infertility.

Use of medications

Many women want to understand whether a mini-abortion is dangerous and how the rehabilitation after it goes. Soreness and bleeding immediately after a medical abortion are considered normal. The pain increases approximately 30-60 minutes after using Misoprostol, but after separation and release of the fertilized egg, it disappears. To reduce pain, you can take Naproxen or Ibuprofen, and if the pain is unbearable, narcotic painkillers such as Oxycodone or Codeine are sometimes prescribed.

In approximately three to four percent of cases, a pharmacological abortion can result in partial interruption or further development of the fetus and continuation of pregnancy. These kinds of effects after taking medication often occur when the dosage of the drugs is not observed or in late periods of pregnancy, the presence of hidden inflammatory processes or improper functioning of the hormonal environment. With similar results of an abortion, the woman is worried about prolonged, non-stop and heavy bleeding, which is accompanied by cramping, painful contractions, and a fever begins. To get rid of symptoms, as a rule, curettage of the fetus from the internal cavity is prescribed. If this is not done, the fetal tissue remaining inside will rot, provoke infectious processes, general blood poisoning, and even death is possible.

Restorative procedures after an abortion include the prevention of inflammatory processes, for which antibiotics are prescribed. To normalize hormonal status, doctors prescribe oral contraceptives. In general terms, after termination of pregnancy, especially at a long term, medications such as Doxycycline and Metronidazole, Fluconazole, which have an anti-inflammatory effect, vitamin complexes and various oral contraceptives are used.

Abortion at 16 weeks

As already mentioned, according to the law, abortion at the request of a woman is performed only up to the 12th week. So is abortion performed at 16 weeks? After 12 weeks, serious reasons are required for abortion. Medical contraindications include abnormal development of the fetus and threat to the life of the mother.

Social reasons include conception due to rape, death of the child's father, incapacity and others. Only under one of these circumstances can you have an abortion at 16 weeks. So it is much better for a woman’s health to take care of herself earlier and have an abortion at a shorter period.
