Food for the road: selection rules
Regardless of whether you travel by train or by car, the same rules apply when it comes to choosing food for the road:
- we exclude perishable foods from the list of travel provisions, otherwise your vacation will begin with diarrhea, and every day counts for you;
- We choose products that do not thaw. If you want ice cream, it is better to buy it during one of the stops;
- We select food that does not crumble and does not stain your hands. The less worries you have on the road, the more comfortable the trip;
- We take food on the train that does not have a strong odor. Garlic, onions and even boiled eggs create an indescribable amber that your compartment neighbors will have to smell. Have compassion for them;
- we make our life easier: we select products that do not require cleaning, then there will be no problems with taking out the garbage either;
- There is no place to cook in the car or train, so we take ready-made food on the road or for the preparation of which you just need to add boiling water;
- dealing with sliced food on the road is also not easy, so we do it at home and put already sliced bread, sausage, etc. in the travel bag.
What to take with you when going outdoors. List
What to take with you to nature in order to enjoy your vacation in the clean air as much as possible, without spending extra time on preparation and without suffering from hastily leaving some important detail at home?
No matter how you gather for a picnic - be it a close family circle or a large company - your comfort will largely depend on the preliminary organization of this wonderful event called outdoor recreation.
We offer you a detailed list of what to take with you outdoors, but you can add to it at your own discretion or cross out what you don’t need.
To make a fire
- charcoal or firewood;
- ignition products (special liquids);
- regular or long-burning matches (for wet and windy weather), you can get by with a lighter;
For cooking
- barbecue (if necessary);
- skewers and (or) grill grate;
- a pot (or even two if you plan to have porridge and fish soup, for example);
- spoon with a long handle (stir food in a pot)
- oven mitts or thick gloves (will be useful for a cook around a fire)
- knives;
- cutting boards;
- baking foil (if you are going to bake potatoes or fish);
- washcloth and scraper (for washing dishes), if necessary.
Necessary things for a picnic
- tablecloth or thick oilcloth;
- rugs or bedspreads (seats)
- paper towels and napkins;
- disposable paper tableware (unlike plastic, you can then burn it in a fire without harming nature and the environment);
- technical water (from the tap, if needed - for washing hands, vegetables, fruits);
- food stretch film or bags for packaging food (protection from insects during a picnic and convenient transportation of remaining food home);
- garbage bags;
- a tent (or several) if you are going to spend the night outdoors.
Picnic snacks
- cold or dry sausage;
- hard cheese;
- pate or other canned food;
- bread, loaf, pita bread;
- prepared food as desired (sliced food, boiled eggs, salads, etc.);
- vegetables and fruits;
Food for the main table
- marinated meat for barbecue;
- sausages (sausages, frankfurters) and vegetables for grilling;
- millet (other cereal) for porridge, fish soup or kulesh;
- raw potatoes for baking;
- bacon (for potatoes in foil or dressing kulesh);
- fresh vegetables (tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, sweet peppers);
- fresh herbs (onions, lettuce, wild garlic, parsley, dill);
- sunflower or olive oil for dressing salads and frying;
- ketchup and other sauces;
- salt, seasonings, spices.
Picnic drinks
- water with and without gas;
- juices, compotes, fruit drinks;
- alcohol.
For games and entertainment
- badminton;
- ball;
- Card deck;
- twister;
- towns
- pen or pencil, leaves.
Personal belongings and protective equipment
- insect repellents;
- sunscreens;
- hats (especially important for children;
- warm clothes;
- swimsuits (if needed);
- personal hygiene products;
- soap;
- toilet paper;
- wet wipes;
- disinfectant gel or hand spray.

What food to take on the train - list
When packing your suitcases at sea, take with you foods whose presence in your travel diet will not lead to poisoning and will not cause additional hassle associated with cleaning, preparation and disposal.
We recommend taking with you foods that do not require cooking:
- vegetables already washed at home: cucumbers, carrots, sweet peppers. It’s better not to take risks with tomatoes, since there is a high probability of staining your clothes;
- fruits: apples, pears, plums, apricots. They will weigh down your luggage, so you can take fruit purees on the train as an alternative;
- sandwiches with cheese, meat, sausage. Do not spread butter on bread: it melts and loses its taste. Choose smoked sausages and use well-done meat - these products are stored for a long time at normal temperatures;
- pate in small packages. Tasty, satisfying and convenient: I ate the contents and threw away the jar;
- processed cheese in plates and portioned triangles. It will not deteriorate during the trip, and getting rid of the packaging will not be difficult;
- canned fish, just choose cans that can be opened without a can opener;
- pre-sliced bread or pita bread. On the go, you can combine it with sausage, cheese, vegetables and other goodies;
- yogurt, just buy one with a specified maximum storage temperature of 25°C;
- nuts and dried fruits for snacks. Unlike sweets, they will not melt and will not stain your hands;
- marshmallows and marshmallows for dessert - these sweets tolerate the heat well;
- water, drinks. It is better to avoid sodas: they do not quench thirst, but increase it;
- salt, if you need to salt something on the road.
Semi-finished products requiring minimal cooking:
- porridge, noodles and instant mashed potatoes in plastic cups. There will always be boiling water on the road, and within 5 minutes a hearty lunch will be ready;
- tea and coffee in bags, and don’t forget to grab sugar, also packaged in portions.
Home-cooked food:
- baked meat. When preparing it, it is advisable to use more spices: rosemary, oregano, tarragon, which are natural preservatives. Medium and medium-rare meat spoils quickly, so exclude it from the list of road food;
- Butter pies and muffins are perfect for an afternoon snack.
And don’t forget the golden rule of “KLMN”: mug, spoon, bowl, knife. The dishes must be unbreakable, that is, either metal or plastic. An excellent solution is disposable plates: they take up little space, weigh little, and don’t require washing.
What to take with you on a picnic
In the fresh air, the taste of food is felt brighter. And a change of scenery will make simple dishes even tastier.
If you are going to have a snack in nature, in addition to what is indicated in the basic list, take with you:
- - Dishes. A disposable one - paper or plastic - will do. It's much lighter. If you don't have a car, this is a very important factor, because the lighter your luggage, the better. Bowls, a cutting board and cutlery will also come in handy.
- - Several knives - one will not be enough.
- - Corkscrew. Planning a romantic get-together with a bottle of wine? It is advisable that you do not have to open it with your finger.
- — Paper and wet napkins, disposable tablecloth.
- — Garbage bags. Don't forget to return to the city with them. The forest is not a garbage dump.
- - I'm on my way. For a light snack, simple dishes that do not require cutlery are suitable. Sandwiches, vegetables and fruits are a great option for a modest picnic. All products must be prepared in advance: fruits and vegetables are washed, and sausage is cut.
What to take with you on a picnic
How can you not go to a barbecue in the summer! This is a favorite type of vacation outside the city.
If you are planning a more serious gastronomic trip, the highlight of which is barbecue, then the following to the list:
- - barbecue. A folding one will be more convenient on the road;
- - grate;
- - tongs or spatula;
- — folding chairs and tables;
- - coal, ignition;
- - hatchet;
- — canopy tent;
- — by the way, the products will include meat, sauce, grilled vegetables, and seasonings.
What not to take on the road
Having described the food that you should take with you, we will also list the foods that you should avoid on the road:
- from chocolates and chocolate - they melt in the heat;
- from boiled eggs - because of the smell;
- jacket potatoes get your hands dirty;
- from sausages, boiled sausage, chicken - they quickly become unusable;
- from pickled cucumbers and tomatoes, dried and salted fish - cause thirst;
- alcohol - not everyone likes the smell of fumes and rowdy neighbors.
What to take with you when traveling with a child
Young naturalists enjoy spending time outdoors. But city children often have no idea what to do with themselves in nature. To prevent them from running out of charge on their gadgets, provide entertainment for them.
Camping with children is a responsible undertaking. If you go with backpacks, have your child have a small backpack too. Fishing? So, a fishing rod. The child should feel like part of the team.
You will have to take a minimum set of toys with you. A compass and binoculars will interest the young tourist. Pencils and an album will help you convey your impressions of communicating with nature in a creative way.
A ball, frisbee, kite, rackets and shuttlecock will fill your leisure time on a country holiday.
What to take with you when traveling with a child
What to take with you when going to the beach
The beach is sun, sand and... insects. Therefore, the food you decide to take with you to sea should:
- withstand heat - the list is given below;
- be well packaged - use plastic bags and containers;
- have little weight.
Such products include:
- homemade cupcakes. However, not everyone will want to bake while on vacation, so you can buy low-fat crackers at the store;
- vegetables: cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, kohlrabi;
- fruits. The same ones that we recommended to take on the train will do, but put the plums and apricots in hard packaging;
- nuts and dried fruits. Pre-divide them into portions and pack them, thereby preventing sand from getting into them;
- water, homemade lemonade. But do not drink very cold drinks, otherwise instead of swimming in the sea you will have to be treated for a cold;
- sandwiches. Make them the same way you would make sandwiches for travel.

What to take with you: list
Wherever you go, you can't do without these things. A basic list of items that are necessary for any outdoor trip:
Water. An adult drinks 1.5-2 liters of water per day, especially if he is on the move. Find out in advance if you can replenish your fluids along the way.
Repellent. Wherever we go, mosquitoes are always there, especially in the evening. If you are going outdoors between May and September, choose a product that also protects against ticks.
Headdress. Sunstroke should not interfere with your rest.
Sunscreen. Ultraviolet rays will reach you through the crowns of the forest, at a ski resort, and at a summer cottage.
Comfortable closed clothing. If you are not in nature solely for sunbathing, wear closed clothes made of thick fabric. Remember that areas of bare skin tempt insects.
Knife. Walking for mushrooms, hiking, fishing or barbecuing will not be a joy if you don’t have a knife with you.
Telephone. Despite the fact that the signal is not available everywhere, you need to have a means of communicating with the world. It is advisable that the cell phone does not run out of charge for a long time.
Matches. Place them in a plastic bag with a tight seal to prevent them from getting wet.
Food. Even if you plan to spend only a couple of hours outdoors, your snack should not contain perishable foods. In the heat, before you can blink your eye, they will spoil.
