It has long been popularized as a quick and effective way to eat for weight loss. People manage to lose up to 4.5 kg in just a week. You've probably heard other names for the method - for example, the model diet, the Dolly Parton diet, or the Mayo Clinic diet. Despite the fact that this clinic has nothing to do with cabbage soup at all.
Cabbage soup
To date, there is no consensus regarding the appearance of the technique and the identity of the person who developed it. According to the American Dietetic Association, the cabbage soup diet appeared in the 50s of the last century, but according to another version it happened much earlier. A recipe for something called Doughboy Cabbage Soup actually exists, and its appearance dates back to the First World War! Although it is assumed that American soldiers created the recipe not to lose weight, but to fight scurvy (you know, a historical disease that killed a lot of people, all because they suffered from a vitamin C deficiency). And it just so happens that cabbage contains a lot of vitamin C.
After its enormous popularity in the 50s, the diet was forgotten for some time. However, soon - in the early 80s - it was revived. People made photocopies and passed the recipe from hand to hand, and after faxes and the Internet appeared in the 90s, this diet became one of the most popular weight loss methods of all time.
The technique is also known as the Model Eating Technique, the Dolly Parton Diet, or the Mayo Clinic Diet.
Why is this soup fat burning?
It would seem that a small list of the most accessible ingredients, but allows you to lose weight. Too good to be true? But no, I myself lost weight very well on it and can share my modernized recipe.
I won’t tire of repeating that you can’t take one magical product, eat it all day long and still lose weight. This is science fiction and doesn’t work that easily. You will still need to slightly adjust your diet in favor of natural foods, add a little physical activity and a positive attitude.
What exactly you do doesn't matter. For some, jogging in the morning is suitable, for others, a whole hour in the gym. 30 minutes of interval training before breakfast is enough for me and it works like a magic wand. But this is in my case, and you choose what is pleasant and beneficial to you.
Why is it important? Because fat needs to be burned. Eating on soup will prepare the ground for this, and physical activity will fuel it with all your might.
As for nutrition, I do not recommend that you completely eliminate sweets. If you use soup as the main dish for weight loss, then after breakfast you can eat any usual dessert. Seriously! This is my personal experience and a little sweet in the first half of the day will not harm you, on the contrary, it will be much easier for you to stick to your diet.
There is only one caveat - vegetable soup helps to lose weight only for those who lose weight on carbohydrates. If this is not your thing, you are unlikely to be able to reset as effectively as you planned.

All ingredients included in the soup are rich in fiber, vitamins and at the same time have a calorie content tending to zero. Moreover, they all have a low glycemic index, which means you won’t find anything better or more effective for losing weight.
The biggest plus of the soup is that it is warm. This is an excellent food for the winter cold, when you don’t want cool fruits and the body devotes a lot of energy to warming itself up. This way you will lose weight, but not become exhausted. It is important.
Who is it best suited for?
The cabbage soup diet is most effective for two specific categories of women.
- For those who can't really spend a lot of time on any other diet. Let's face it, we are a society of people who are constantly chasing something, and you know that in reality you are one of them too. Most diets require you to be on them for five to six weeks before you notice any results. But even before the results appear, you will most likely give up because you believe that losing excess weight is not easy. It's really not easy raising three kids while working two jobs and going to night school. It's not easy living with Parkinson's disease, after all. The essence of weight loss is a simple choice: what do you want - to be healthy and in good shape or to eat another donut?
- Those who don’t think about changing their lifestyle, but just desperately want to lose a few kilograms in a week in order to fit into a wedding dress without experiencing discomfort due to the treacherous folds under the arms.
On a note! Despite the fact that cabbage soup for weight loss provides only a short-term effect, a person who loses significant weight in just a week receives excellent motivation for further action. This is the first step towards making real and lasting changes in your lifestyle.
Cabbage soup for weight loss - original recipe
The original cabbage soup recipe from the 50s is almost the same as what is used today. The only difference between the modern version is that less time is spent preparing such soups. According to the original recipe, the soup needs to be simmered for an hour, but this is more than enough time for the cabbage and other vegetables to lose almost all their nutrients. In the new version, you need to bring the dish to a boil, then cook for no more than 20-30 minutes.
What is typical is that you can eat such soups in as many quantities and as many times a day as you wish - there are no restrictions.
Ingredients
- green pepper (1 pc.);
- a can of tomatoes in their own juice (1 kg);
- celery stalks (6 pcs.);
- large onion, chopped (1 pc.);
- a good large head of white cabbage (1 piece);
- V8 juice (from eight vegetables - about 1.3 liters, if you can find one);
- water (4 glasses);
- olive oil (1 teaspoon, no more!);
- hot sauce (½ teaspoon or to taste).
Soup diet for quick weight loss for a month - minus 10 kg: menu
If you prepare this soup not only for yourself, but also for the children, I advise you to grind it with a blender. And, of course, don’t add too much salt or pepper in this case.
Ingredients:
- Water – 1.5 liters
- Potatoes – 200 gr.
- White cabbage – 250 gr.
- Pumpkin – 150 gr.
- Onions – 90 gr.
- Leek – 50 gr.
- Green peas – 60 gr.
- Vegetable oil – 15 gr.
- Salt - to taste
- Ground black pepper - to taste
- Greenery
Finely chop the vegetables and chop the greens. Add potatoes, carrots and pumpkin to a pot of boiling water. Cook for 15-20 minutes.
Add cabbage, onion, green peas. Cook for another 10 minutes. Pour in vegetable oil, salt and pepper. Add the herbs, cover the pan and cook for another minute, then remove from the heat. Bon appetit!
Very gentle and healthy vitamin soup! It is very easy to prepare in a slow cooker, so it is especially convenient to cook it at the dacha. I recommend it to those losing weight!
Take:
- 4 stalks of celery
- 1 tomato
- 1 onion
- 3 potatoes
- 1-2 carrots
- 300 gr. sour cream
Finely chop the celery.
We also finely chop the remaining vegetables. Place all the ingredients in the multicooker bowl and set the SOUP mode for 1 hour.
Grind the finished soup with a blender.

We chop the white cabbage and separate the cauliflower into inflorescences. Cut the carrots into strips. Cut the bell pepper into cubes.
Place both types of cabbage in a pan of boiling water. Make sure that the water covers all the vegetables.
Add carrots and pepper. Cook for 10 minutes in boiling water.
Meanwhile, chop the celery, tomato, onion and chop the garlic.
We send them to the pan to cook for 5 minutes with the lid closed.
We cut the dried tomatoes, add them to the soup, add your favorite spices to taste, and squeeze out the juice from half a lemon. Cook with the lid closed for another 2 minutes, then remove from the stove and leave to steep for 10 minutes. Serve to the table and sprinkle with herbs. Bon appetit!

- Tomatoes – 5 pcs.
Prepare like this:
- Wash and peel all vegetables.
- Bring two liters of water to a boil.
- At this time, cut the celery into pieces, peppers and tomatoes into cubes, and finely chop the cabbage.
- Place all products in boiling water and cook for 10 minutes.
- After reducing the heat, cook for another 15 minutes and remove.
Leave the pan on the stove without heat to allow the soup to steep.
Recipe No. 2 - celery root soup - products:
- Celery root – 1 pc.

- Celery stalks – 0.250 kg
- Onions – 5 pcs.

- Tomato – 1 piece
- Water – 2 l
- Salt, herbs, spices
Prepare the dish like this:
- Wash all vegetables, chop, add hot water and bring to a boil.
- Continue cooking for 15 minutes.
- Add tomato, salt, season with spices and herbs. Cook for a couple more minutes and turn off.
- You can make puree soup from the prepared dish. To do this, boil the vegetables for 30 minutes and blend in a blender.
This diet is designed for a week. During this period, you must consume soup at least three times a day. You can do it more often if you feel a strong feeling of hunger. Avoid eating sweet and salty foods, smoked foods, fatty and fried foods. Don't forget about water - up to two liters per day.
This is what the diet should be like:
- Monday: fruit soup, excluding grapes, unsweetened tea and coffee.
- Tuesday: green vegetable soup, baked potatoes, excluding beans and corn.
- Wednesday: vegetable and fruit soup, excluding grapes.
- Thursday: low-fat milk soup, fruits and vegetables.
- Friday: tomato soup, boiled beef 0.5 kg.
- Saturday: beef soup, green vegetables, except potatoes.
- Sunday: rice soup with vegetables, fresh fruit juice, excluding legumes and potatoes.
The diet can be extended up to two weeks, and the menu is repeated. Then take a break and you can repeat this diet.
Soup diet for weight loss with rice
Rice soup is the most effective way to lose weight. Effectiveness per week - minus 5-7 kg, since this dish contains numerous vitamins. But don't eat it in large quantities.
Daily menu for a soup diet with rice for weight loss:
- Breakfast. Rolled oats porridge with water, a glass of green tea (without sugar).
- Lunch. 1 banana.
- Dinner. Cream soup with rice, 2 apples, a glass of low-fat yogurt.
- Afternoon snack. A glass of low-fat kefir.
- Dinner. Rice soup with chicken, 1 glass of orange juice.
Onion soup diet for weight loss

The first day . Let's call it a fruit day. Eat any amount of fruit you want, with the exception of bananas. If this is not enough, i.e. you feel hungry, then eat the soup prepared according to the above recipe. Today only fruit and soup.
Second day . Today, eat only vegetables - steamed or raw (the quantity is still unlimited). Try to avoid beans, corn and peas, but eat plenty of greens. In a word, eat only vegetables and soup all day. For dinner, you can have a large baked potato with butter (butter or vegetable) if you wish.
Day three . A kind of combination of the previous two days. Eat fruits (bananas are still not allowed), vegetables and soup in unlimited quantities. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to taste potatoes for dinner that day either.
Day four . Today is a wonderful day - you can finally eat bananas without traditional restrictions! Also drink plenty of skim milk and, of course, eat as much soup as you like throughout the day.
Day five . The diet allows you to eat about 300-500 g of chicken or beef. Although you can replace the meat with something high in protein. Also eat fresh tomatoes (no more than six). Ketchup you put on beef doesn't count! Finally, drink plenty of water (seven to eight glasses) to flush uric acid out of your body. As for the soup, use as much as you like.
Day six . Load up on vegetables and proteins! By the way, you can freely replace one of the “protein” days with baked fish, but not both at once. Eat a lot of protein (in fact, it can even be several steaks if you wish), soup and vegetables - if desired. Also eat as many greens as possible, and still avoid baked potatoes.
Day seven . Brown rice, vegetables and unsweetened fruit juices. Eat/drink plenty, but don't forget your soup.

To prepare dietary cabbage soup you will need:
- half of white cabbage;
- onions (about 300 grams);
- bell pepper (2 pieces);
- ripe tomatoes (2-4 pieces);
- celery (1 bunch);
- carrots (3 pieces);
- If desired, you can add fresh mushrooms to the soup (for example, about 250 grams of champignons).
While about 2 liters of water are boiling in a saucepan, all ingredients are finely chopped. After boiling, everything is thrown into water and cooked for 20-30 minutes. If desired, you can add salt and spices 10 minutes before cooking. The soup is infused for 30 minutes, after which it can be consumed.
This is a classic recipe and way to make cabbage soup. There are other options for making soup. Chinese - soy sauce and hot chili sauce are added during cooking. Bengali soup allows you to add a few fresh cucumbers and tomatoes to the pan, as well as spices: turmeric, cumin or saffron.
Attention! It is not advisable to use potatoes in soup, as they create heaviness in the stomach. But during a weekly diet, you can eat it a couple of times, but in baked form.
What can and cannot be done while dieting?
DO NOT allow yourself to suffer from hunger. Eat plenty of other foods intended for that day. If you're hungry, you're not following directions. If you don't follow the directions, you won't get the results you want. All clear?
DO NOT add salt to soup, vegetables, potatoes or other foods. This applies not only to table salt, but also to sea salt, as well as substitutes and salty seasonings.
DO NOT drink anything other than water. You may have seen other diet options on the Internet that allow you to drink, for example, cranberry juice. This is not worth doing: if you want to lose 4 kilograms, not 2, and want to burn as many calories as possible, then drink water - its calorie content is certainly zero.
DO NOT change the soup recipe. If you believe that an additional 200 g of carrots will not harm you, then you will have to be disappointed - this vegetable contains a lot of sugar, and therefore calories.
But you can sometimes drink a cup of weak coffee or tea, WITHOUT adding cream or sugar. The calorie content of these drinks is minimal, so everything is in order here.

Taboo foods are flour products (bread, buns and other baked goods), alcoholic drinks and sweets.
In addition, as an addition to cabbage soup and to diversify your diet, you can consume one of the following products daily (one product per day). This could be a baked potato with 1 tsp. vegetable oil (preferably olive), 400 g of cooked meat or fish (chicken, lean beef, veal or lean fish), boiled, grilled, baked or steamed vegetables, fruits, excluding persimmons, grapes, bananas.
What is the effectiveness of the technique?
We've said this before, but we'll say it again: Most mainstream diets are perceived as a very slow path to weight loss. So slow that many women give up on them even before visible results appear. And the reason for the popularity of the cabbage soup diet is that the real weight loss that can be noticed occurs in just a week. And this, in turn, motivates women to make longer-term decisions that can lead to even greater weight loss and dramatic changes in their health.

On this diet, you are allowed to eat enough so as not to feel hungry, but only “liquid” and hot dishes. The basis of Dr. Evdokimenko’s soup diet is the simplest soup of vegetables and chicken. To prepare it, you will need the following products:
- Water – about 1.5 liters
- 150 grams skinless chicken breast (this is important)
- 500 grams of fresh white cabbage
- 5-6 tomatoes
- 2-3 sweet peppers
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Onions - half 1 piece
- Salt to taste

Not only are these green foods healthy, but they also add flavor to your soup. You can put all types of greens together or separately, it all depends on your taste. Preparing this soup is not difficult:
- First, pour about 1.5 liters of water into the pan.
- Place the chicken breast in the water and leave to cook until tender (no more than half an hour). The result is a flavorful broth.
- Remove the cooked chicken breast from the pan and finely chop it, placing it in a separate container.
- Then add the rest of the finely chopped vegetables from the list to the broth and add salt.

- Now, 5-10 minutes before readiness, along with the chopped herbs, put the chopped breast into the pan.

It is worth paying attention: There is no need to eat the entire pan at once. This can negatively affect not only your well-being, but also the result of losing weight in general. You can eat exactly as much as you want to feel full.
There is no need to go hungry on Dr. Evdokimenko’s soup diet. However, overeating will not be beneficial. It is better to cook the soup fresh every day. For all seven days of the diet, you need to alternate soup and other healthy foods throughout the day:
- Raw or boiled vegetables
- Fruits – raw or baked
- Cottage cheese seasoned with fermented milk products
- Fish - preferably low-fat
- Meat - dietary varieties: chicken, turkey, veal
- Rice boiled in water
A few more tips:
- Do not forget about water balance and drink at least one and a half liters of water per day.

The majority of people on this diet lose 5-6 kilograms in a week, and some lose up to 10 kilograms. It can be used once a year, and the rest of the time it is recommended to monitor the amount of calories, proteins, fats and carbohydrates consumed.
Cabbage soup diet
Do you love cabbage and wouldn't mind cabbage soup? May your love benefit your body too. With this diet you can lose weight, but keep in mind that you cannot stay on it all the time, and it is generally contraindicated for children and adolescents. If you really like the cabbage soup diet, you can use it every third week: then it will be safe and effective.
We prepare cabbage soup as follows: for six liters of soup we take one head of cabbage, six medium onions, six carrots, six green onions, a can of tomatoes in their own juice (900 grams), two green sweet peppers, five stalks of celery, parsley, dill, one and a half glasses of raw brown rice, pepper, salt. We cut the vegetables, put them in a saucepan, fill them with cold water, boil for ten minutes, cover with a lid, and cook over low heat for about an hour. How to eat soup
There are several options here. You can:

Each option is effective in its own way. I like the first and third options the most.
Fasting day
The point of fasting is to eat only this soup for one day. It is incredibly lean, diuretic and cleansing. Suitable for the cold season. For example, in the summer it is better to fast on kefir and apples, which I wrote about in the article kefir-apple diet (reviews). It is very important for the effectiveness of the diet to maintain a balance of warm and cold, so as not to disturb the heat exchange, otherwise there will be a breakdown with the ensuing gluttons.
Weekly diet
A soup diet for a week is planned based on what you are losing weight on. If on proteins, then 80% of your diet should be proteins (cottage cheese, eggs, lean poultry and fish, legumes). If you are losing weight on carbohydrates, 80% of your diet should consist of vegetables, whole grain cereals and some fruits with a low glycemic index (apples, oranges, etc.).
Regardless of the type of diet, you should eat soup for weight loss at lunch with the addition of a hard-boiled egg.
Example of a protein diet:
- apple, portion of cottage cheese;
- a glass of kefir;
- fat burning soup with boiled egg;
- a portion of cottage cheese;
- portion of baked fish with vegetables.
Example of a carbohydrate diet:
- vegetable salad, buckwheat porridge;
- apple;

- orange;

Eating on soup for a long period
The concept of such nutrition is suitable for those who do not want to go on a diet or cannot for some reason, but at the same time want to reduce the calorie content of their daily diet. The big advantage of this approach is that you do not deny yourself anything, but at the same time you quietly reduce your caloric intake so that the body does not notice anything. You feel great and are losing a little weight. The gentle regime is always the best, because it is gradual.
Regardless of the option you choose, I recommend adding an egg to the soup. If you are easily satisfied with the soup, then you won’t need an egg, but if not, if after 40 minutes you feel hungry again, it’s better not to risk it and add an egg.
The best part is that there are options. If you just need to add a little extra richness, throw the egg directly into the soup while you cook it. And if you want to satisfy your hunger so that it does not bother you for at least 3 hours, boil the egg separately and add it in two halves per serving on a plate. Protein will perfectly slow down your appetite and you won’t want to eat for a very long time. Combined with fiber from vegetables, this works flawlessly.
Cabbage soup diet menu
- First day. Cabbage soup, any fruit (except bananas).
- Second day. Cabbage soup, vegetables (except beans), one baked potato (for dinner).
- The third day. Cabbage soup, any fruits and vegetables.
- Fourth day. Cabbage soup, six bananas, eight glasses of milk with a minimum percentage of fat.
- Fifth day. Cabbage soup, one can of tomatoes in their own juice or six fresh tomatoes, 600 grams of fish or poultry, at least eight glasses of still water per day.
- Sixth day. Cabbage soup, 600 grams of fish or poultry, vegetables (except potatoes).
- Seventh day. Cabbage soup, fruits, vegetables, brown rice, natural juice.
Cabbage diet rules
Cabbage soup for weight loss is not the only dish that can be consumed during the diet.
What products, in what combination and in what order can be added to the diet? It needs to be supplemented on days of the diet. The first day - any fresh fruits and berries except bananas;
Second day - any green vegetables (bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchini) fresh or canned; exceptions are green peas and beans. In the evening, it is permissible to eat one baked potato tuber.
The third day of the diet - any vegetables and fruits except starchy ones (bananas, potatoes).
The fourth day - also vegetables and fruits, plus a banana and skim milk (no more than one glass).
Fifth day - we include boiled fish, chicken or beef in our diet (no more than five hundred grams per day). You can even make cabbage soup with meat for weight loss. You can also eat fresh tomatoes.
Day six – we eat boiled beef, a salad of fresh cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers.
Day seven – we include boiled brown rice and freshly squeezed fruit juice in the daily menu.
During all seven days you can drink unlimited amounts of water, juices from fresh vegetables, tea and coffee without sugar. What you should completely avoid are alcoholic and carbonated drinks, bread in any form and fats.
The number of meals is also not specified. However, it is better to eat more often, but less. The volume of soup eaten per day should also not exceed a reasonable amount. A liter of soup a day is enough for your stomach. As for the feeling of hunger, it will happen. However, you are already ready for this. So make some soup, eat it and lose weight to your health!
